ParticipantRe: Ketch v Sloop
As a ketch owner (#183) I agree with all that has been written by the serious sailors. Just a few additions: the mizzen mast does not diminish the usefulness of the cockpit at anchor or underway as traffic revolves around a mid cockpit table and the mast provides a natural terminus for it [Once was aboard a 424 sloop in Oriental, NC, and at the dock it was ‘party-central,’ but the owner wasn’t interested in blue water sailing]. Also, having rigged all lines to helm, we can reef the main underway and have successfully sailed in 35+/- with a genny, reefed main and mizzen on a pretty upright boat. Only time we’ve done jib & jigger was in 35 + when non-sailing friends were aboard and we didn’t want to spill their drinks; it works well. I’ve tried to do what Tor and the others have, with exceptions, and at the age of early 70’s, find I can raise, reef and douse all sails from cockpit and sail her coastwise and offshore without requiring assistance other than
my spouse. Well, maybe some help when docking, but sloop owners need that too. Ketches make great sense. MJ Sherman on Nokomis. On Sunday, May 25, 2014 9:40 PM, “” <> wrote:
