I need to remake part of the cradle to get rid of all the oil soaked wood. I was going to use regular plywood and Oak stiffeners. coated with West epoxy. do you think that would be good enough or should I look for some other wood like maple ??obviously mahogany or teak are too expensive to be used for stiffeners.

      Alan,
I’d go with clear pine, it will probably outlast the new tank. You can
always paint or expoxy it if you are after permanency.

      Really, clear pine??
Thinking about weight of full tank. Should be about 520lbs. Although the tank is actually supported at the ends and probably not much in the middle.

I used pressure treated pine, one 2×6 plank sitting on top of wedges that were attached to the existing framework of the sides. I also epoxied those wedges to the hull. The PT plank was fastened own onto them. The weight of the tank is dispersed along it and the back angled part of the ‘crate’.
I didn’t bother epoxy coating anything seeing as how well the rest of the ‘crate’ held up over the years with nothing. Lots of air moving around the tank.

      Alan,

I can’t speak for the strength you’ll need in your tank
supports, but when I’m building things with wood in the
boat I often give them a couple of coats of West epoxy
resin, then paint if needed for UV or cosmetics. Thus
coated I believe virtually any wood will outlast both
      me and the boat.

Tor, I too would normally recommend coating anything wood with a couple of coats epoxy, thinned with acetone or some other resin thinner, but in my particular case I didn’t bother, judging the job at hand would easily last the life of the rest of the ‘crate’ which has lasted over 30 years with nothing on it except a coat of grey primer that was put on after assembly (or I was really sick of the engine sitting in the aft cabin doorway while we lived aboard). I felt confident it would easily last another 35 years. 🙂
