Pete,
Some years ago Alan also turned me on to the DC-powered
wifi antenna that has been in Silverheels’ rigging ever
since, enabling me to get online at distances up to 2
miles from the signal’s source. This has been a real
boon to this i-addicted cruising sailor. Alan knows
things that we mere mortals don’t. Kind of like Bob
Fine that way. I wonder what other nuggets he’s sitting
on.Tor

Thanks Alan, the next time I’m down in the depths of the aft or port
cockpit locker I’ll be doing a much more ‘thorough’ inspection. On Thu, Jul 3, 2014 at 3:38 PM, Alan via maillist

When the student is ready the teacher appears. I s just getting ready to research a Wi-Fi antenna/amp system. What system did you end up witty and how high did you mount the antenna Tor?

Alan,
Buddy, I owe you a beer. Two beers. A (bronze) cotter
pin was indeed missing from one of the sheave axles.
Also, one of the stops needs a rubber bumper. That’s
all so far, but I haven’t gotten into the pedestal yet.
I’ll have to screw up the courage to open that up. I
must do it, though. It probably hasn’t been inspected
or serviced since 1978; certainly not since I’ve had
the boat.Much obliged,
Tor

Tor,
I will indeed collect on those beers, although it will either have to wait for St. Martin or the chat and chill in Georgetown.
If yours is anything like mine, you’ll need new brake pads for the pedestal that you can get from Edison.

More likely Georgetown this fall, Alan. I think I’m
going back to Panama from there. My pedestal brake works, but not as rock-hard firm as
I’d like. So I expect you’re right about new pads. More
than that, now that you got me going on this I just
want to see everything in there and lubricate it all.
Lucky us, to be having so much holiday fun. I feel
sorry for those poor suckers with new boats. All they
get to do is sail, sail, sail, the poor sods.As long as I was in the lazarette I just pulled the
manual bilge pump for a rebuilt, my 4th of July treat.
Hey, it’s all about the freedom to rebuild an old pump
if that’s what I choose to do. God bless America.Tor

You’re right and who else has the liberty to sit underneath their cockpit because the fuel tank is out and stare up at the pedestal. you’re right, what a holiday.

Since I moved my fuel tank to below the salon sole and put the 12v genset/scuba compressor under the cockpit, I installed a hatch in the cockpit floor. Prompted by the posts of late, the steering inspection took less than two minutes. Luxury of sorts I guess.

Luxurious, indeed. I’m heading back into the dungeon
now to put some fresh paint on another barely reachable
section of my fuel tank, this one via the lazarette.Tor
