Anchor Platform / bow sprit
Author:
Hi All,
I know a lot of P424s have been modified with the anchor platform/bow sprits with the dual anchor rollers. My 424 does not have this, but I’m very interested in putting one on. Does anyone have schematics of anchor platforms they’ve added their boats? Or better yet, could anyone refer me to a fabricator that has made several of them for other P424 owners. Then I could just reach out to them to see about having them make one for me.
Please let me know. I appreciate your assistance.
Best,Paul

Hi Paul,
Our boat has the anchor platform, but I believe that it was a factory
add-on on a lot of the boats, similar to the wood cap rails etc. Our
factory drawings show the platform, but not in any useful detail.Dave and Pat

Paul,
If you are going to fabricate an anchor platform you may want to consider
something different than the one supplied by Pearson. The one Pearson made
is just cantilevered off the bow with no support from below. That works
fine for anchor storage and is not a problem when anchored if the load is
taken up on a snubber line, but it may not work so well when trying to
break an anchor free or if the snubber comes loose in a blow. I’ve seen
more than one 424 with an anchor platform bent downwards 5-10 degrees,
which I assume was the result of excessive force on the anchor roller. The
equivalent of a solid bob-stay under the platform, would probably work.Regards,

After you bend the platform straight again… consider having some 3/16″
136 stainless plate bent into a channel and welded to the bottom edge of
the long tubes as well as below the cross tube. Cut at nice angle on
the ends of the channels before welding and fold closed, weld up pretty,
grind, buff, and polish. You can pick the boat up by the anchor
platform after that. I will post a picture soon. (don’t notice the

Thanks for all the replies… I’d just like to stay on track:
1. Does anyone have a design or schematic for the anchor platform?
2. Can anyone refer me to someone who has fabricated them in the past?I love all the insight on this forum, but we get so easily distracted from the actual questions, we sometimes don’t get any applicable answers.
Thank you all for staying focused. I appreciate your help.

Hi Dave,
So yours was a factory option? I mistakenly thought they were all custom add ons. I wonder if anyone has the original Pearson designs (with greater detail than the overall boat plans)? That stuff has got to be around somewhere. I realize that the 2-point attachment is not idea, but there are LOTS of them out there that seem to be working just fine.
Thank you,
paul

ParticipantWell, actually there is a third point. The anchor platform bolts to a ledge built into the headstay chain plate/bow assembly.

ParticipantMy double roller anchor platform has the center angle iron built into the headstay. I believe a PO had a piece of diamond patterned stainless plate cut to shape and welded into place on top of the platform frame. It’s a handy foot rest and I believe in increases rigidity.

Paul, I was looking around and found this platform that is similar to what’s on my 424. I want to add that lower stiff bobstay like in this picture. I think if follow the links you can find the manufacturer of that one.

When I installed my new vertical windlass, I wanted it to be
capable of handling a second bow anchor. This wound up requiring
several innovations, one of which was re-aligning the anchor
roller chutes. It wasn’t too difficult since my boat doesn’t have
an anchor platform. (I did have to cut an access port just abaft
the stem head to get at the roller chute thru-bolt nuts.) My
point is, if you’re planning to install an anchor platform it may
be useful to first be sure you’ve got the windlass you’re going
to keep, and then plan your platform rollers to match the angle
that each rode will travel from the windlass to the anchor
roller. This will be especially important if you’re using a
vertical windlass.Just a thought that might save one of you a future headache.

Paul, if you have a drawing of the overall boat plans that show’s the platform (mine is on the deck plan listed as S.S. Anchor Sprit #45), I’ll be happy to take precise measurements from my boat that should give enough to a fabricator of your choice. The only dimension I will not be able to give, is the wall thickness of the tubing because it is welded closed. The diameter of the tubing, all radius’s and supports I can accurately draw out for you.
Let me know!

The link you sent is a very similar one; worth looking into. I’ve seen some other I like too.I’ll look at my deck drawings, but I don’t think the details are on my plans. If it’s not a huge pain, I would very much appreciate the dimensions of your anchor platform.
Seems like everyone who has one, are benefiting from a factory option (not a post-purchase add-on). I’ve got a couple good fabricators here. maybe I’ll just spec out my dream platform. I’ve actually seen some others that seem very practical.
Thanks to all. I appreciate the input.

Paul,
Will do. I just went out and took most all dimensions including the rollers. I have enough to come up with a set of working drawings that a fabricator should be able to work from to get a similar if not exact copy. It will need to be “fitted” by the fabricator onto the boat where the ends attach to the bulwark. Give me a few days and I’ll get back to the forum. I might need help sharing the drawings with the forum, there may be others that would like the use of them.

I added mine. The pipe is schedule 40 stainless I took it to midis muffler shop to bend. When trying to fabricate the multiple angles were too much for me. I cut the pipe inserted another pipe inside tied the platform in place and marked the position so the metal plate lay flat on the bow. Welded and polished many hours.

If my email below (with your drawing) doesn’t show up in the forum emails in the next few minutes, then they’re probably having issues at that end. It may show up in the group’s emails soon.

Thanks for trying Tor, I managed to email it too but not sure if it will show up on the (old) forum. I also registered on the new forum and hope that whole transition doesn’t ruin my day … or days.
I have been able to respond through the mailing list, and I do get emails of everyone who responds on any given subject. Also I’ve been able to work directly from the old forum but failed to get that picture loaded. Thanks again for trying.
This message is being sent from the forum (old). It’s been 15 minutes and I still don’t see the message with the anchor platform drawing.

another, of the way it is mounted to the chainplate and the actual double

hopefully to the forum(new or old). I just registered for the new one but
have not confirmed.Ken

Paul, the image/drawing “was” posted to the new forum. I think the reason it wouldn’t go to the old forum is the size of the picture, which I don’t know how to change unless I am led through it with prompts. Any way here is the overall dimensions of the platform itself. I’ll make up another drawing of how it’s mounted to the headstay chainplate along with my double roller set-up which welds to the top of the platform.

paul – you will get the best resolution copy from the “new” forum
everyone else – the old forum doesn’t work with pictures very often.
that’s why there’s a new forum. please stop trying to post this picture
to the old version of the forum software.another option is to put the a copy of the image in the “gallery” – but
I’m afraid to mention it because I feel like it might be a pandora’s
box. (and it’s another piece of software that is no longer supported
[as of 2 months ago] = maybe I’ve been doing this too long )– pat

Thanks for trying Tor, I managed to email it too but not sure if it will show up on the (old) forum. I also registered on the new forum and hope that whole transition doesn’t ruin my day … or days.
I have been able to respond through the mailing list, and I do get emails of everyone who responds on any given subject. Also I’ve been able to work directly from the old forum but failed to get that picture loaded. Thanks again for trying.

Pat, I hope I’m not making things worse, I apologize if I am, I just want to share this with the forum. I’m a dumb sob when it comes to jpg’s, codes, HTML’s, picture size and all that “other” stuff.
I’ll stop trying to post pictures directly to the forum but the truth be told I don’t know how to “not” do that.Paul, if your reading this please, email me at vickykenr@gmail.com (subject- Anchor Platform) and I’ll send you the pictures completely off the forum.

Ken et al,
You aren’t making things worse-I’m doing a horrible job explaining this
transition. We do all have the pictures.. Paul has them too. He
already said he has them. He’s only thinking that you have a better
copy than the copy he already has.BTW ( by the way ) great job drawing out the anchor platform. You
really shine there. The pictures were received both via email and on the new forum. the old
forum doesn’t work and I can’t get the picture up there. It’s only
there for all the really old information that I don’t want to lose. I
tried for 3 days last month, much to dave’s distraction, to transport
the old info to the new forum. I only made a bigger mess so I quit
trying ( besides we needed to go sailing ). I’ll make it a read only
forum from here on out to hopefully reduce some confusion.– pat

I know I keep flogging this old horse, but whether or not you
have an anchor platform it’s just plain advantageous all around
to run your snubber through a well-backed stem pad-eye a foot or
two above the waterline.Tor

I really want to do that Tor, as I think it makes excellent sense. I am however a bit reluctant, since drilling holes (near the waterline) and appropriately securing the pad-eye seems a little daunting for my limited skills.

Tor, I agree and that is a perfect place to end a support for a platform. I
would fabricate it all into one fitting. Just so I don’t have to tear up my
v-berth to look, am I correct to say that the access to drill and put in
proper backing for that fitting is easily accessible at the forward end of
the water tank?

Thanks Tor, that looks like it’s actually “in” the chain locker and not
forward of the water tank. From your earlier picture of the u-bolt on the
outside I would of figured it to be lower. This is better and easier access
when I do finally get to this newest added project to the list.

required drilling a pair of parallel holes through the stem from the
outside. I have no idea how I managed that so neatly. Just lucky, I guess.
The attached photo, taken in the midst of my chain-locker re-creation
project, is a view of the inside of the chain locker looking down from the
cut-open foredeck. The snubber U-bolt ends and the broad backing plate are
clearly visible at the stem, well forward of the forward water tank.
Outside the U-bolt is about 18″ above the waterline.Tor

GuysÂ
I know I am late but here is the picture of my anchor storage.  I did basically what Ken has drawn up I guess.  the first picture is before I added the dolphin striker for support.  I did this because  every other 424 I saw had a bent platform. Â
Now I want to incorperate Tor’s ubolt into the bottom attachment point. Â I may have to turn over the bottom plate because the support covers the plate as it is.
Cheers Y’all

Linus …
… that sure looks robust enough. Maybe a little shorter than the one
Pearson or whoever, fabricated and offered, but similar.I took a better look at my platform with all this going on and yes, I am
bent. I may add a temporary striker for now, because I’ve not the time to
remove the whole thing and straighten before I head out cruising. And I’m
cheap. That type of repair to me is a major haul-out with months to get
things done, so “maybe” when I pick a place to do my rig it will get some
lovin’.
