Anyone know the make … or model of the duel steaming and spreader light on the mast? I’d love to just find a replacement bulb …..for now! It’s a 2″ dia sealed halogen bayonet style with two contacts.
Thanks Ken

Ken,
This may be another of those items that changed repeatedly during the 424
production run. Sarah (hull #2) only had a steaming light on the front of
the mast and spreader lights on the spreaders. I replaced the steaming
light with an Aqua Signal combination steaming and foredeck light. I also
upgraded the original spreader lights to sealed beam lights. Now when I
turn on all of my deck lights I look like a fishing trawler and everyone
gets out of my way.I know that doesn’t answer your question, but just to point out what others
have on their mast my not resemble what you have.Regards,
John Stevenson

Pardon the brevity. I’m typing this on my phone and I hate typing on my
phone.

My 424 came with a pair of cheap spreader lights, one on each spreader. The bulbs looked like small headlights and consumed so much power I rarely used them. They were unreliable too. Most of the time, one or the other wouldn’t work because the unplated connectors corroded. To my knowledge, this is what Pearson used on all the 424s. If you have a pair of unexplained screw-holes on the bottom of your spreaders, your boat had them too. They were junk so most owners have probably replaced them by now. The steaming lamp is a tiny Perko lamp. It too draws a lot of power but it’s only on when the engine is running so I never bothered to replace it. The original deck lamps are junk too. I replaced the tiny bow lamps years ago with pulpit mounted lamps and installed a masthead LED tri-color/anchor light. I put a relay in the breaker panel to automatically switch between the masthead tri-color and deck + steaming lamps when the engine is started. I considered putting an automatic switch on the anchor lamp to turn it on at dusk and off at dawn but it consumes so little power it’s not worth the effort.
I replaced my spreader lamps with LEDs, also going for a less expensive alternative to marine spreader lamps. I had to get a bit creative to keep the things from swiveling. The headsail would press against them when tacking and push them out of position otherwise. A simple modification to the mounting bracket fixed that. They work well and I can see no movement in the ammeter when they are on.

When I replaced Silverheels’ spreader lights I wanted one shining
straight down on the mid-deck area and one onto the foredeck. The
first was easily accomplished by mounting a fixed spotlight. The
other required a swivel base, but like yours, Rich, it kept
moving so that it pointed everywhere except on the foredeck where
I needed it, and there was no provision in the design for
tightening the swivel. After a few failed attempts to stabilize
it, I finally used ss baling wire to secure it in place. Not
yacht-club pretty, but now it stays aimed where I need it.Tor

Thanks everyone, I didn’t expect a lot, as I figured everyone’s boat had
already bit the bullet and changed over the years. I’m pretty sure my unit
is what came on the mast original and I’ve tried like hell and so has a
dealer or two to help me find the bulb, to no avail. I have an LED in mind,
I was just tring to keep the last minute to do’s, down to as little $$$
possible.Ken

I’ll try to remember to send out a picture of what I did with the mounts. It’s a bit neater than bailing wire or duck tape.Rich

Thanks, Rich. My only other idea was to take the whole fixture down and drill & tap the pivot ball for a set screw. Since I was getting ready to set sail for the West Indies at the time, I just hoped my bailing wire might get me there. That was a few years and many nautical miles ago. Eventually I just figured “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” From the deck you can’t see the wire, only the light aimed steadfastly at the foredeck.
Still, I’d like to see what you did. Maybe I’ll get motivated to do it right after all.
