After losing the cowl vent over the head once again last weekend, I decided to look for a guard. The main sheet snagged it again. Has anyone seen anything that would fit there and not cost an arm and a leg?
Rich

Rich,
Not the solution you are looking for, but you might try a low profile vent
with (

or without a cowl (

I have a low profile cowl vent in the dorade box over the head, and it has
never been snagged by the main sheet or jib sheet. A non-cowl vent would
probably eliminate even the possibility.Regards,

I just had to replace our fwd cowl vent as a result of a sheet snag sometime in the dark of the night offshore. When I replaced it, Nicro included a little piece that spans the base of the vent and secures the vent into the base. It’s quite possible the vent could still pull out, but it seems reasonably secure. I suspect those little spanner pieces are also available as a retrofit.

Rich,
Silverheels came with a large, chromed metal cowl on the dorade box over the
head. It screws securely into a metal ring mounted into the top of the
dorade box. I always assumed it was a Pearson installation, but from what
you’re saying perhaps a PO replaced a cheaper rubber/plastic factory cowl.
At least, it sounds like yours is one of those pop-out plastic rubber
versions. I’ve caught the main sheet on this metal cowl many times, but it
doesn’t pull out. A guard might solve your problem, but I believe a metal,
screw-in cowl will for sure.Tor

Would a thin cord stretched from the leading edge of the cowl to a point on the deck allowing the sheet to ride up and over the cowl work?

ParticipantRich:
I had a Dorade Guard made for my boat in 2013 by an outfit named Whitewatermarineinc.com. You can call Mike Klass or Tom Heering at 810-987-4837. They will want the dimensions and will provide you a formula for that. They will build on what you give them. I put a guard on the SS cowl vent over the head, by the top hatch on the starboard side. It looks very sturdy and professional, especially with the SS cowl and is a great grab rail for going out on deck in rough weather. The hardest part of the installation was taking out the ceiling in the head and putting it all back again. They were the best price I could find, and they do good work.
