I am replacing my anchor chain and am debating the length. I currently have about 100 feet of 3/8 HT4. How much chain will the chain locker hold? The locker is stock Pearson with no modifications, being fed from a windlass down the angled tube.
      Thanks!

Can’t speak to the 424, but the 422 holds way more than expected. Mine currently holds:

      – primary rode: 200’ 3/8 chain
      – secondary rode: 50’ of 3/8 chain plus 200’ of 5/8 rope
      – secondary anchor: fortress FX 23
      – 2 20’ anchor snubbers
      – coiled wash down hose

      Dale,

How much chain depends on your cruising plans. Overloading the
foremost compartment in the boat with unnecessary weight isn’t
always the best way to go. Although I opted for 3/8″ chain when I
refit Silverheels, I now think 5/16″ might’ve been the smarter
choice. It weighs less, costs less, takes up less space, and is
still plenty strong for a 424. In the Caribbean I find that 150′
chain + 100′ of line on the primary anchor, and 50′ chain + (I
think) 200′ line on the second bow anchor is more than enough.
I’ve never felt like I needed more than that. Still, I also carry
200′ of spare 5/8″ anchor rode coiled in the forepeak in case I
ever do need an absurd amount of scope. In 8+ years it has yet to
be used even once, but might be if I were bracing for a
      hurricane.

I had 100′ of chain and 150′ of nylon.  Lots of room left, but the problem is castling. The chain piles up and eventually blocks the feed tube.

Castling is indeed the consideration. The locker has the volume to hold 250-300″, but it castles and obstruct the tube (at least on my 424), with as little as 100-110′ feed into the lower locker (via chain tube). I only keep my most used/first 200″ in the lower locker, with another 100″ (last 100″ which I seldom use), led up to the upper locker for storage. This way, I do only one “knockdown” when retrieving on standard set.

Slight thread drift, but what brand chain is anyone/everyone considering?   In the past it was a no brainer, go with Acco, but I have seen a number of complaints about Acco galvanizing in the last year or so.
Generic Chinese chain is not an option I would consider.   Maggi Italy I hear is entering the US market but I don’t know much about their QC.
      Any other options?

Gosh, I have to knock down the castle every 25′ feet or risk the
windlass jamming. But I have a port in the deck anchor locker and a
length of pipe for doing that. Chain tube on my boat is too close to
the chain locker door in my opinion.

I don’t know how my anti-pyramid rod would work with the standard Pearson ground tackle accommodation, but here’s how I deal with anchor chain pyramiding in Silverheels re-designed anchor locker: http://www.tor.cc/articles/c-tip_6.htm .

Since I wrote this, I had the end welded and then painted the thing, so it’s not so ugly anymore. 😉

A stock 424 doesn’t come with an angled pipe. Most were probably built with some kind of windlass however. Mine came with a manual Simpson that was long ago replaced with an electric Lofrans. I glassed in a pipe to feed part of the chain below into the forepeak.

So how much do you need? This depends on how deep the water will be where you anchor. You can use less scope with chain. In good weather, I usually put down 3:1 or 4:1. 80 feet is what I usually put down in depths of around 20 feet. Some anchorages are as deep as 50′ so I have 200′ of chain with another 200′ of 5/8 nylon spliced to the end. The nylon is there in case the stuff accidentally runs out. I use 3/8 HT, AACO. It comes in a 200′ half-barrel.

Shipping is expensive. They offer a curb-side drop off. I had them put it under my bow roller when the boat was on the hard.

I think that most folks use 5/16″ HT. The half-barrel weighs about the same but you get 275 feet. The working load is less.

I originally put 400′ up there but it weighed too much, (625 lbs) and I never saw more than half the chain so when it needed replacement, I just went with 200′.

BBB chain is less expensive but the working load is much less. You have to match whatever your gypsy is made for.
