      Engine Damper

I had two problems with the engine damper plate as delivered by Mack Boring.
There was a very loud pulsing noise when the engine was first started.
The noise appeared to be from the RV-20 V-drive. Walter said there was no
problem on their end. The noise disappeared with RPMs over 1,000. The old
Westebecke was set up to idle at about 1,000 so we thought it was just a
difference in the engines. I lived with the noise for about 2 years, and
then I lost reverse when docking in JAX after motoring all the way down the
coast from Beaufort, NC. I had the transmission re-built and the damper
plate inspected. It was clearly toast. This was the old style damper
      plate with springs.
Mack Boring refused to accept that this damper plate was DOA when
      delivered.
I had the local Yanmar dealer replace it with whatever Yanmar recommended.
This was one of the newer damper plates with no springs (not a PYI).
Unfortunately the local Yanmar dealer installed the damper plate backwards
and it failed a year later. Then I was dealing with a yard in New Bern, NC
and they installed a similar plate of a different manufacturer and they got
in correctly. I’ve had no problems for the last 3 years.

What a cluster! I’m sure you’re glad to have all that behind you. I read something on the R&D website that referenced problems with rattling when using the standard damper plate with the Yanmar. I’m hopeful that since I’m sticking with the W58 that I won’t have that issue. I can get the transmission out in a couple of hours now, so if I’m wrong it’s not a disaster. I’m paying $150 for my damper plate, and the higher quality plate from R&D is $800 I think. Worth the gamble…

I have a Yanmar 4JHTE (75hp) and no rattle, quiet as a sewing machine.
