I have an electrical question for anyone who knows about this stuff (since I don’t). I’ve got a solar panel that’s working and a controller box that isn’t. I’ve ordered a new box, but it’ll take some time to reach me here in the Bahamas. Meanwhile, I’d really like to have that solar charge feeding my hungry batteries.
My question is, is there any reason why I should not temporarily direct-wire the panel to the bank? I’m aboard almost all the time and habitually monitor the battery level, so I should be able to flip the solar panel away from the sun or disconnect it from the batteries when I see their topped up. Other than the danger of overcharging (which I believe I can avoid until the new box arrives), is a direct connect a problem?
The solar panel is 185W. My multi-meter says it’s putting out about 24v in bright sunlight.
The combined 12v battery bank is about 750 AH (new Lifeline-XT AGM’s).
Thanks,
Tor
