I remember somebody on the list getting a froli bed?

IF anyone’s put one in the Vberth how did you deal with the un-evenness caused by the wood trim pieces on the bottom of the bed?

We have a froli in the aft berth.. We love it.

As for the slats… in our v berth (and aft berth) one would have to
about 8 inches wide and sleep right next to the wall to “feel” those
slats. Regardless I’m going to ask our friend (who sells froli) about
      the slats.

      Aaron,

I bought the Froli system at the Annapolis sailboat show last fall, but I use it in the aft cabin berth. It definitely improves the bunk’s comfort level. Not sure what wood trim pieces you’re talking about in the V-berth unless it’s the fiddles at the after end, where the filler piece joins. The Froli pieces can be adjusted – fitted – to accommodate odd bunk shapes. Can’t you just not snap them together where the fiddles intrude.

From their site I can't figure a thing out.  What are they? Like mattress tiles?  How do you do a v-berth?  It's all very unclear.  I think I'll just replace the foam with medical mattress grade stuff.

One of my ex – clients (from when I was consulting) who is a friend makes medical mattresses for wheel chairs, bariatric services, and so forth – he makes them using closed or open cell foam with layers of memory foam if desired and so forth.  These are foam mattresses that are treated to resist mold and mildew and are very high density foam.  I've told him that he's missing a great market.  But when I leave for England to visit, I'll take my mattresses which are pretty much squished and get the foam replaced.

I take it your friend makes these mattresses in England. Do you mean you’ll get yours over there when you eventually sail your boat across, or is your “visit” more imminent? Will the guy ship? Are these things uncommonly expensive? I ask because I’m due for a new aft cabin mattress. The Froli support helps, but it doesn’t make up for dead foam.

No, no, he'll make it in Suffern, NY where his factory is.  I'm leaving for England for a week to see family.  I couldn't get across with the crappy foam I have… He will ship and I'll ask him if he's interested in shipping a duplicate to you and how much it will cost.  My trip will be the last week of April while the boat's on the hard getting some fiberglass work done.

Before I moved onboard I had HMC make a mattress for the aft berth.  It is 7″ of latex foam with a standard mattress cover.  It was expensive, nearly a full boat unit, but it is the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on – afloat or ashore.  So I have no regrets on the expense.

Bob, if you have your friend make a custom mattress for you I recommend you have him put a hinge in the head of the mattress as HMC did for me.  I know you now have access to the under berth locker through the former drawers, but it is still convenient to be able to get to that locker through the top.  With a hinge, I just flip the head of the bed over  and I have access.  Normally this doesn't even mess up the sheets and blankets.  The hinge also gives access to the locker at the foot of the bed when I slide the mattress forward.  Still have to pick up the mattress to get access to the middle locker.  I was worried that this hinge would be a weak point in the mattress construction.  So far, after nearly six years of use, the hinge has held up.

This is the manufacturer’s web site with pics:

Basically it’s a mini-suspension system that fits under your mattress and supports it better as well as allows airflow.

Well, we just linked all the froli springs over any unevenness. It has transformed the foam mattress and now the v-berth is really, really nice!

We were having a huge problem with moisture and mold under the foam. We’ve tried the little 1×1 ft tiles from west, ‘special’ lining material, nothing worked. I’m confident the froli will, and as a bonu it’s pretty dang comfortable.

Also, since I get a west marine discount, it takes a lot to get me to venture off the reservation. I like the froli a lot, though admittedly one night is not a lot of experience, but it is the first good night’s sleep I’ve had in a couple years so it’s important to me!!

I think that Bill Tice from Charisma told me that he uses a Temper Pedic foam mattress in the aft berth. He said that it is not hot like I thought it might be. I asked the mattress inspector that frequents the bar about the foam and he said that changes in temperature cause dramatic changes in the foam’s softness. Yes he is a mattress inspector for the state. There is an expert in every field hanging out at the bar. I think that Bill said the full size fit with no alterations.

      Linus~
I continue to enjoy my 4″ Tempur Pedic memory foam on the aft berth, going into my third year of use. I have not found it to be “hot, clammy, damp” or any of the other criticisms usually offered by those who would like to sell me another type of mattress. I do occasionally find myself wishing it were firmer; where it a regular Tempur Pedic mattress as opposed to just a pad, this may rectify the complaint. Keep in mind that winter temps in the Bahamas are rarely over 82*F, and while the Chesapeake summers are considerably hotter I am in my slip with the AC running. The full size pad conforms very nicely to the dimensions of the Pearson “mattress” with no trimming necessary.
Looking forward to getting together with you In Oriental in several weeks. You can stretch out on the berth and see what you think.
      regards, BILL

Yes, the aft berth is pretty close to a full size commercial bed (used to be called a double).  I use standard full-size fitted and flat sheets on the berth.  The fitted sheets are a little loose at the foot, but fit tight at the head.
