Kind of a slow day here with the 424 group. Everybody
      must be hard at work.
Any good hot water heater stories to relate…..

Mine works, but not from the engine. I have to fix that. Otherwise I have to run the generator for hot water. The adventure will be fixing it.

Not very exciting, but there you are.

I replaced mine last year with a 11gal unit. It fit in the same space under the aft bunk. I sent out notes and photos of the installation if you missed them. Installation wasn’t straightforward.

Has anyone got an LPG hot-water-on-demand set up? I cruised six years with a Wolter water heater on my last boat. The
unit itself could be a little scary at times – it tended to release propane in advance of ignition, and then fire up
with a loud poof! – but I really like the principle of it for cruisers who live at anchor. I believe that Wolter system
has long since been discontinued. Any knowledge out there of others?

I need to replace mine as well. Will probably go with the Force 10 (Kuma) 6
gallon. I haven’t figured out which configuration works for our setup. I was
tempted to go with the 11 gallon, but I am not sure I have the room because
my Seafrost unit is in the adjacent locker, with piping running thru the hot
      water locker.

I am also curious about experience with the Force 10 units. They are a lot
less expensive than many others ( but stil expensive relative to a home unit
:-). Have they held up well. I don’t mind spending twice the price for
something that lasts 3 times as long.

      Hi Tor,

If you can't find an on-demand unit in marine stores, I'm sure you can in an RV market. They use them all the time with nearly the same environment (well, maybe not as corrosive).

I'd be interested if you find anything suitable for the 424. They pretty much disappeared from the North American market when the industry over reacted (IMO) to a couple of deaths resulting from installation issues (no vent) and operator error (vent closed). I think they're a pretty common household appliance in the rest of the world.

Tor is looking for a the on-demand unit.

I am just looking for a suitable replacement for the
stand unit and whether anyone has put in a bigger unit
or something other than the Raritan unit.

I installed an 11gal Force-10 11gal water heater under the aft bunk in the same location that the Raritan heater was installed. I had to remove a small piece of the bunk shelf to slide the unit in, then replace it once the heater was in place. I also had to cut a hole in the short bulkhead under the bunk to allow access to the water fittings. I relocated the water manifold to some otherwise unused space under one of the bunk drawers. It is a very close fit.

As I remember, I found the best price for the unit at Port Marine Supply.

I have been wondering about these.

I have decided against, as I have heard that no surveyor will give you boat
a clean bill of health (I guess with regards to insurance) if you have one.
Treat this statement as rumor; I read it somewhere, and can’t quote my
      source.

I have thought about the little Colman unit to be able to make hot water out
in the cockpit, but I fear that it would end up in the galley. I only intend
to live on the boat for a few months, so the hot water from solar and engine
should be enough. This would just be a little luxury item.

      Walter,
I heard the same rumor, actually a surveyor told he would write up any installation as a code violation, but since I don't have one I never tested this position. I doubt I would go that way with only 2 6# propane tanks on board. Now if I had 2 20# tanks …

Rich, I guess I am still confused. Under the aft berth
      – like under the mattress, in the storage area?
      or behind the aft berth?
I am trying to envision the hot water heater UNDER the
after aft berth…. unless your 424 aint like mine –
      highly possible….
      Still got your writeup?

I have the aft cabin model. This is the layout with two companionways. My original Raritan water heater was under the mattress in the center of three lockers. I removed that heater and installed an 11gal Force-10 in the same space.

I’ll look for pictures and notes.

I have the same model. I also have the 3 storage
area’s UNDER the aft berth…. but, my heater, also a
Raritan, is installed in the port sail locker. Access
to which is FROM the aft berth – a 17″ x 17″ cutout
      and access panel.

      Alan:

My old Rariton Heater was in the same position as Rich’s. However, where
yours is may be a good spot, because it is a bit of a lost hole in the
locker. It would also make it easier to put in the 11 gallon unit.

Rich – have you found the larger size to be usefull. You mentioned
previously that it can take quite a bit longer to heat up, but of course you
then have twice the hot ( or warm ) water – which you may then use as is and
      not diluted with cold.

Well, that is the interesting thing. It may be out of
the way being in the port sail locker, but it doesn’t
have any more room. I am trying to figure out if I can
get an 11 gallon tank in there.
But then I have the same questions as you , is it
      worth it?

      Paul,
Once the water is hot, yes, having the larger tank is great. I always try to conserve water, but I find that 6 gal is barely enough to do dishes. My old W60 used to make hot water about as fast as you could use it. After about 30min, the water tank would be hot. Just keep the engine idling from then on, and the water would stay hot. When I switched to the Yanmar, I find that the engine takes a lot longer to warm up if it isn’t under load. I never really took accurate notes, but I don’t think it even reaches 190deg at idle; maybe 160. I never ran the new engine with the old water heater, so I can’t compare how water heating times compare.

If you are in a slip, I would expect the extra hot water capacity to come in very handy. Since you are under little pressure to conserve water, having 11gal available for showers and dishes would be great. Electric heating elements take longer to heat water than a hot engine, so you won’t be able to assume that the electric heater will keep up with demand.

Hey Bob (and John, since you expressed interest),

I’ve been busy the past couple of days. Just now catching up on 424 correspondence.

I Googled on-demand water heaters and came up with PrecisionTemp’s “ShowerMate” model (http://www.precisiontemp.com), which appears to be the right kind of thing. Turns out the founder of the old Wolter on-demand water heater company now works at this place. My boat came with a pretty new, traditional water heater and it’s working perfectly, so I may just keep it for the time being. But on-demand is far and away the most practical system for liveaboard cruisers who stay at anchor most of the time.

      John,

Someone installed a 20-lb propane tank in my boat in addition to the original pair of little ones that Pearson built into the port aft cockpit locker. Silver Heels’ big tank is in the mid-cockpit box visible in the attached photo. It’s plumbed to the small-tank compartment, so I can switch to any of the three tanks at will.

I wouldn’t want to go distance cruising, either, with only the original Pearson tanklets.

      Hi Alan,

In my model, there was no locker apparently. The seats in the cockpit are contiguous. So the PO built a box under the aft port cockpit seat that opens up like a on one end. The bottles go in like shells in a clip, one atop the other.

It’s a little wierd, but it works. I could get a picture if you like.

Mine's a '78 (hull 8), and it's a ketch that has had a staysail added (so, as Tor and I went back and forth with, it's either a cutter ketch or a staysail ketch, but that has nothing to do with gas tanks, really).
