at long last my 8d agms are in their twilight. having heard the
options, if you’ve been using these big boys what are you doing/have
you done when it’s time to repower? I have the two stbd Yucko boxes,
but I’ll put the starter battery fwd in the port locker (so it can be
      any configuration)

My boxes only hold 4D’s not 8’s

I think the best likely location for the big ones is under the steering quadrant.

Unless your bilge is clear, I measured and I think they might just fit side by side there, but it’ll be tight.

When I changed out my batts I switched to 2 6v Trojans in each box. Th is
gives a total of 450 amp hrs. This serves as my house bank. I mounted an
Optima red top, 850 CCA, agm in the engine compartment to serve as starting
battery. This has served me well for years. Cost of the Trojan T-105 is
about $120 per battery (need 4).

Rod, so you have wet cells as your house bank and an agm as the starting? Doesn’t that cause problems setting your regulator/charger?

in line, high in the bilge is nice. but I’m more curious if folks are sticking with big, expensive batteries or trying something else. it would be $2000+ to replace all agms. Rodd is right to use a starter battery for the starter. what I have now is shear overkill. who else has gone trojan t105? anyone have odyssey (military spec)?

      Adam,

How did you come up with $2,000+ for AGM’s? That seems very high. The Port Supply price for Group 31 (105 Ah) AGM’s is $147.99 ea. Four of those ($592) plus one Group 27 starter battery ($135) totals $727.

I have three 4D-AGMs as my house bank (2 in stbd locker, one behind water heater) and a group 31 for the starter battery/bank 2. I bought them at a place on City Island, NY – the 4Ds were 275 each. Do they say 'Marine'? No, they don't. But they're heavy duty 200AH batteries.

There is nothing inherently different between a 'marine' or 'rv' or 'heavy duty deep discharge' AGM battery (also, for flooded cells, ditto).

You are always welcome to spend 50% to 100% more to get the 'marine' name.

I would like to have a 4D as the starter battery, but I don't have the room.

I mounted 1 odyssey as a starting battery in the engine compartment. I have used several of these on smaller center consol boats for years and never been let down. They are almost bulletproof! They are expensive, but I was able to get a deal on them. The next time I buy I’ll have to look for something different. I lost my connection. I used 2 8d and a group 31 mounted on the forward end of the existing battery box. The 8ds and 31 were made by the same company as the sea volt from WM with the same specs for half the price at batteries plus.

      Linus,

To which of the Batteries Plus models were you referring? I didn’t see any Group 31, 105 Ah AGM’s on their site.

I looked on the batteries plus web site also and didn’t see any of these batteries listed. The local guy said that the batteries were made by eastpenn and were the exact same battery as west marine with the battery plus sticker on the side. They are definitely eastpenn batteries I will have to see if they last as well as expected. He also sells these batteries to the yards in the area and I asked if they had any problems and the reports were good. Here’s the web page. It has changed so I didn’t find the same sheet that had all the specs but I’m sure it’s in there somewhere. http://www.eastpenn-deka.com/assets/base/0181.pdf
They look just like the Sea Mate with a different sticker.

Here is the spec sheet that I remember using. http://www.eastpenn-deka.com/assets/base/0245.pdf See if they don’t match up with the WM book. Also if you have an old WM book I thing it had information about Deka green manufacturing on the same page.

Thanks, Linus. I’m sure you’re right about them being the same battery. I heard & read about them last year, but forgot the brand. I don’t see any price lists on those sites. Can you really buy a Deka brand Group 31 AGM for $75, delivered (or store pick-up)? That’s one heck of a good deal.

I paid $895 for the 2 4d’s and 1 group 31. I don’t have the break down for each battery. Looking at the price at WM just one 31 and one 4d would be that much.

No doubt the WM price is outrageous. I believe I paid $140 each for the WM Group 31 AGM’s from Port Supply a year and a half ago and thought I’d done all right price wise. I didn’t know about the factory-direct brand, Deka, at that time. Just curious whether Deka’s cost less than that. Hopefully, it won’t really matter to me for some years yet.

No problems– wet cells are set up to charge at 14.2 and AGM’s can take a similar charge. They all float at 13.2. BTW, my first Optima AGM red top lasted for 11 years! so I wouldn’t worry about having the settings the same as for lead acid batts. I have a Freedom unit for dockside and an Ample Power smart regulator and Alternator (120Amp) for cruising. Last set of Trojans lasted about 4 years. Not the same life as the old Surettes I used to use, but price of Surettes got out of hand!
