On the principle of KISS, consider the old
      truck driver’s method slightly modified.
      Carry 2 or 3 empty, 1-gallon plastic
antifreeze or motor oil containers on board,
one always being in the head, wedged
alongside the toilet. Using jugs avoids all
the problems you guys have mentioned, plus
Bob Fine’s concern, expressed some months
ago, of guys missing the toilet bowl
underway. (Hence he requires them to sit to
      pee on his boat.)

The 1-gallon jugs will accommodate one man
about 24 hours before needing to be emptied
overboard and rinsed. Although I often
      single-hand, I carry 3 jugs so I can
alternate them, leaving the 2 empties open
and secured on deck to air out. I’ve been
doing this for years. As a bonus, it
drastically reduces the frequency of toilet
      re-builds.

I offer my male crew the option, or they can
pump 25 times per pee as must the ladies.

Explains why so many trucks drift out of their lanes.
This is also a safety issue as many male overboard bodies are found with their zippers down.

Yes, it certainly is a safety issue. As for
the truckers drifting, I’m not surprised.
Those things don’t have any keel under them
      at all.

The thing is….from a very early age my wife got used to peeing in a can so she could stay up in her attic fort, away from her 10 brothers and sisters and have time to herself as long as possible. So all our past cruising years she was fine with having a ‘pee-can’ when on watch. Practice makes perfect ladies! So with our new composting head, which we still have incredibly high marks for and have no plans but to continue with it, the pee issue associated with it demands a little more time than normal. We use the pee-can more often than not and as long as it’s just the two of us there is no problem with dumping in the sink with a fresh water rinse after. Maybe some day I will put a pee holding tank in, in place of the “other one” and have a pump to discharge it overboard or pumped out from the deck but that just adds all that plumbing that we’re living so comfortably without at present. A urinal, of sorts, will keep the pee-can from being dumped into the sink. This is all for when we’re 3 miles out of course, wink, wink.
I imagine a valve handle, possibly over-sized for easy use that’s easy to reach, to open and close as it’s being used.

Used a bottle for #1when on the hard with a bottom job. My wife may not be OK with it. Perhaps if I painted flowers on the jug………

In Canada, our milk comes in 1.33 liter bags, which are served using a milk bag holder ( google it for pics). They are perfect for both males and females to use due to the narrow shape and handle. Pretty common to see them in use on Canadian boats.

Between Paul and Dan, it seems a flower-decorated milk can may be the ultimate cruising ladies’ urinal, with plastic 1-gallon motor oil containers for the guys – sans the flowers. (Who would have thought a sailboat owners’ group would ever reach such lofty heights of functional creativity?)

FYI, since SAIL magazine has been good enough to accept so many of my little Cruising Tips for publication lately, I am hopeful they will consider a summary of this discussion – all participants incognito, of course. But perhaps I had better title it “Number 1” for the sake of discretion.

Lofty heights? More like I started something, then proceeded to pour it

I’m wondering if this would work. I ran across this portable urinal (see attached url) that might work well in the head, attached to the wall in the head or shower, and drained into a gallon jug under the sink or in the bilge behind the newly installed (customized) shower storage door. If it were in the shower, I would have water handy to wash it with. The gallon jug could be emptied daily. As I think about it, it would be easier to use an empty orange-juice gallon jug like the one my brother uses, and just empty it when it is full. Also great for that 3 a.m. pee when you don’t want to wake everyone up with the pumping.

If you use an orange juice jug, be sure to remove the labels – to
avoid unpleasant surprises when guests are on board. I don’t
think draining a “waterless urinal” into the bilge would be a
good idea. Your whole boat would stink!

This thread sort of started with my confession that I use
1-gallon motor oil jugs for myself on Silverheels, rotating 3 of
them so two are always airing out on deck after rinsing. Simple,
neat and free after each engine oil change. The challenge here
was finding a suitable alternative for the ladies. On my boat
they just use the toilet and pump-flush.

Tor: I was talking about putting the gallon jug receiver in the bilge, not dumping into the bilge. No one has mentioned the simplicity of just using the sink or the shower. Of course then it would be called a urinal and who wants to brush their teeth there. This thread has had my interest because I really have thought about the possibility of a urinal with a Y into the sink thru hull for several years. This thread has helped me decide,
really, the gallon jug is a very sound and simple solution.

When I put the boat up on the hard for the winter, I use one of the empty anti-freeze gallon jugs. it’s there all winter. when it becomes full, I know it’s time to put the boat back in the water. Unless of course I go to the boat too many times during the winter and then I have to start using a second jug.
Or the inverse is true also. I don’t go down there enough and the jug doesn’t get full and I have to use the calendar to let me know when to put the boat back in the water.

For the ladies: EZ-P. A foldable funnel of sorts. My wife and daughters keep one in purse for toilets they don’t want to sit on an we keep one in the cockpit with a quart plastic jug.

Pete, I should have known you would have the ultimate answer for
the ladies. That EZ-P seems eminently practical (although I am
trying hard not to picture it). I think I’ll get one to keep
aboard for female crew to give them the option, along with a few
      more plastic jugs.

Love the lavender color, but I still like the idea (who suggested
it?) of the painted flowers. 🙂

      The Lady J (

popular with gals on racing boats back in the 70s and 80s. Allowed them to
properly inspect the wake just like the guys, and sometimes end up a
floater with an unzipped fly like the guys as well.

I rejoice to hear it, Charlie. Your routing idea will work, of
course, but I imagine the hose will still create an odor unless
you flush it with freshwater after each use, which would fill
your 1-gallon receptacle very quickly. Perhaps his and hers
1-gallon jugs would be easier – now that we know about Pete
      Dubler’s EZ-P for gals.

Then, of course, there is the traditional cedar bucket, which got
Larry and Lynn Pardy around the world back in the day. I have a
variation of that for when Silverheels is in dry-dock, lidded for
carrying to my boat yard’s RV dump station.

Not to belabor a delicate subject, there is also much to be said
for a simple variation of the Europeans’ bidet in lieu of toilet
paper. An empty 1-pint plastic beverage bottle kept beneath the
toilet is filled with freshwater from the sink while still seated
on the commode. This provides a simple means of rinsing off your
butt by reaching behind, one hand tipping the bottle at the small
of the back, the other washing. Follow this with a handy wash
cloth, kept exclusively for the purpose, to dab yourself dry and
you’re good to go. No more toilet paper! Our planet’s forests and
oceans will thank you, and it’s much more sanitary than the usual
smearing… well, you get the picture. Employees please wash your
      hands before returning to work.

Oh, I am SO curious to see whether PC-correct SAIL magazine will
print this particular Cruising Tip when I send it to them. 🙂

HA! Last winter I saw one unabashed young woman in Le Marin
harbor, Martinique drop her drawers, squat on her boat’s transom
swim platform just as they were getting underway, and let loose a

Sure, why not? But you’d have to rinse the hose each time, or at least the scupper for sure to avoid a residual odor. Plus it’s not always politic to “go” outdoors, as in a marina or crowded harbor. I still think a 1-gallon jug in the head, used in rotation with a couple of others, is the simplest, cleanest and certainly cheapest solution. And us macho guys who don’t want to sit to pee don’t have to. 🙂

Oh, I was so waiting for that one, Dan! 🙂

Damned near impossible to find for a 424 man, I’ll grant you, but
(since we’ve come this far) it isn’t necessary to make love to
it. You only need to get the tip of your male drainage device (is
that politically correct?), the aperture if you will, centered in
the jug’s admittedly inadequate orifice to complete the mission
      without spray or spillage.

I always admire an honest man, Alan.

Seriously, a liter bottle will certainly work if you elect to
rinse it after each use or two. The advantage of the 1-gallon
jug, as I see it, is that it’ll last a guy through an evening,
overnight and through the AM wake-up visit before having to be
emptied and rinsed. A little more convenient in that regard,
perhaps. Plus in my head the larger, block-shaped jugs such as
1-gallon oil or anti-freeze containers, wedge snugly alongside
the toilet, reassuringly secure during even rough offshore
      passages.

Good point, Elaine, and my apologies for my excesses. I sometimes
forget that there are ladies present.

I am, however, gratified that this often taboo topic has been
discussed (mostly) seriously here. It really is pertinent to what
we do and sharing different approaches to dealing with it may
prove useful to some, perhaps many of us.

With that I bow to your discomfort and will pursue it no further
