Running for a while recently I decided to check the temperature of the V-drive after several hours of motoring. It was 134degrees per an IR thermometer reading. The reading was taken on the aft end of the Vdrive, nerar where the jack shaft enters. Is this considered normal operating temp?

      Thanks.

Yes. It can run much warmer , tho, in the event of bypassed cooling.
Hottest temp should ne forward end where gears and thrust bearing is.

Thanks Bob! Btw, I am back at Brewers Glen Cove for the winter. If you
plan to be in the neighborhood let me know and we can get together.

My vdirve is still being water cooled.–at least to some degree!!

I can make it a point to be stop by. I’d say you still have good cooling
in the drive. Someone here has bypassed the cooler and his drive runs
warm, but not that warm. They can tell you the non-cooled temps.

Operating temperature would depend on your particular installation and how you use it. My old W60 with RV-20 never got the V-drive even warm. Here in NE, water temperatures rarely go over 70deg, and the W60 is really less than 50hp. At that, I never really ran it hard. I was probably only driving with 35hp max. My yanmar 75 with an RV-26 runs warm to the touch. It has an oil cooler but the yanmar doesn’t pump as much cooling water. 134 seems reasonable if you run hard.

My v drive has no cooling whatsoever and runs warm to the touch but not hot enough for you to want to take your hand away, so I would guess 140. I have a temp sensor on it that would sound an alarm at 210, and it has never gone off. I will try to remember to take a temp reading with the IR thermometer sometime when I run her for a while.

I have motored all through the Caribbean heat and had to motor all the way back from Maine this summer without any issues at all.

Much less than 140. Scalding temp is 120-130, so its less. I think the
drives do well with no water, although mfgr suggests it not the case.

I am also running without water in my v-drive. I unhooked it in Seattle. I
made it down the West Coast, to La Paz and over to Puerto Vallarta and its
      been going fine.

      Hi P,

Did you put anything inside the V-drive, or is it actually just empty and disconnected?

      Thanks,

Empty and disconnected. Left a hose on the output side so if needed I
could hook it back up. Hasn’t been needed.

I disconnected mine 5 years ago.
      Filled it with 30W oil.
      No problems.

Do you think there is some advantage to the oil in it?

I think he meant he filled the oil portion with 30 W oil. Can’t imagine
having oil in the water jacket, although I could be wrong…

I disconnected my V drive from water. I filled the water jacket with Oil…
thinking that might help conduct any heat to the outside of the drive and
away from the drive.. might not really help but couldn’t hurt…

Oh, ok. I misunderstood. You’re right, it can’t hurt, but I wouldn’t have
      thought to do that.

I swapped out my RV-20 for an RV-26 a few years back. The RV-26 has an oil pump. I’ve considered running it dry with an oil cooler since I installed it. Walter says absolutely no! The RV-26 runs warm to the touch even with cooling water. I think it would run hot without cooling water. I run it harder than the old RV-20 because my new engine is a bit bigger, but it doesn’t make sense that it would run that much warmer. I’m not sure why the RV-26 seems less efficient. Perhaps the added oil pump is part of the problem. When the cases eventually corrode, I may try an oil cooler anyway; assuming that I still own the boat. I hate the raw-water cooling.

I need a replacement gasket. No point in calling them now. They are in NJ near the Hudson River.

I filled the water jacket with oil too, just to prevent more rusting.
