I took the P424 I’m evaluating today out for a test sail. Originally I thought the portholes leaked and all needed replacing. Now I think the eyebrow teak along the cabin top may also be to be blame. It is loose in few places and definitely waterlogged in a couple as well.

I saw one P424 site where the owner had removed a stainless steel eyebrow, closed all the holes up and put a stripe over it all to keep the eyebrow look and hide the now non-matching gel-coat.

I’m curious if any of you have had leaks through the eyebrow and how you’ve dealt with it. I think I’d go the route of removing it completely. Am I correct in thinking what is under this is just a bunch of holes every few inches and a bunch of glue/caulking which needs to be removed?

      Thanks,

One more question about the cabin top teak eyebrow and portholes. Are the vertical portions of the cabin top through which the portholes are mounted cored or is it solid fiberglass.

      Thanks…

I removed mine, sanded the wood, put on a couple coats
of Ceatol (ALL 6 SIDES) and put it back on. No leaks
since then. Just normal maintainance on a 30 year old
      boat.

The teak trim along the coach top is a possible point for leaks. Pearson used silicone sealant for bedding the thing. Teak cleaners and age can cause the sealant to leak. There is no harm if water gets under the trim, but having it get through the screw holes and into the cabin is another story. I suggest removing the screws and rebedding them with proper caulking. If you do a few at a time, it is no big deal. There is no need to remove the trim. I’ve done this as leaks developed, but I’ve decided to rebed them all this summer to be sure that I get them all.

I am almost postive mine are cored. I have one out now
to start replacing the ports with ones from
NewFoundMetals. I’ll be out there tomorrow. I’ll let
      you know.
