Paul,
How is your Cummins engine working out?

Yes, there is a catch – they are not marinized yet. However, TAD is
marinizing them, so it can be done. The hardest part about marinizing
an engine is getting a wet exhaust manifold / exchanger for it. While
Bowmann in the UK doesn’t make one for this engine, the one they make
for the Perkins 4-154 (approx $750.) is pretty close and this appears
to be what TAD uses. They use an adapter plate to convert the mounting
holes to fit. The other hard part is the raw water pump. They use a
Jabsco gear driven one off the flywheel. These engines first went on ebay in the spring for $2,600. However,
they made the mistake of saying they had 20+ of them, so I knew I had
lots of time. The price recently dropped to $2,165 and they accepted
my $2000 offer. The price includes shipping. They also have the 85 HP
turbo version available for a bit more.Mine arrived yesterday and it was in brand new condition. The
manufacturing date was May /06. I am sure it is going to be an
interesting challenge to complete this project. I thought I would
mention it to the group in case anybody else is looking for a project
this winter. Multiple people working on this would sure make things
easier.http://cgi.ebay.com/Cummins-B3-3-Diesel-BC30023-65-hp-Brand-New-8NG10019_W0QQitemZ250489097149QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a52504bbd&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_2517wt_907

RichCarterParticipantHoly smokes that’s a good price. You’ll have to adapt the bell housing, add
a heat exchanger, engine mounts, and water pump. Does the engine have
engine mount brackets? I can’t tell from the photos, but I think not. As I
recall the water pump goes on the PTO. You’ll need an exhaust riser and
water injection elbow. I think you have to relocate the fuel filter too.
This should be straightforward but would be simpler if TAD would sell the
brackets. They even have an optional bracket set for a Balmar alternator.
Even if you spend an additional $2k on accessories that’s a steal. Would
TAD be willing to sell these parts separately, maybe a marinization kit?
They guy isn’t the most friendly person I’ve ever done business with.
There’s one thing to be cautions of. Marine diesels use a governor to set
the throttle. When you move the throttle lever, what you are really doing
is changing the governor setting. I’m not sure that an industrial engine
uses the same fuel pump. A call to Cummins would resolve this. Also, is
there a warranty from Cummins?I’m tempted to buy one just to play with, but I just spent $3.5k on a new
dinghy today. My wife would kill me if a new engine showed up. Maybe I can
convince her that its for the dinghy. If I still had a W60, I’d buy one and stash it away for the future. I think
they are all gone though. It’s a close match for the engine pan. I think
it could be reworked. I found modifying the engine pan to be
straightforward. I think it took me one day. As I’ve said before, not
including labor, the engine is less than half the cost of a full repower.
This Cummins can use the same V-drive and running gear so you can refit the
engine without doing the rest right away. There’s all the other stuff too
like exhaust system, engine bed, and fuel tank. You could probably get away
with around $5k..$6k for a minimal repower including the engine, assuming
all you replace is the engine.Rich

Participant“How is your Cummins engine working out?
Pete:
I am going to be inspecting a marinized one at the end of the month to confirm the parts I need and will start ordering them after that.
It should keep me busy this winter (after I get back from sailing with Alan from Norfolk to St Martin for the month of November that is!!!)
Rich:
No, it doesn’t have any mounts. TAD was custom making them for each order I think. I am hoping I can get my local machine shop to make them up once I figure out what I need.
Thanks for the throttle info. It looks like it has a standard linkage on top of the pump, but I will have a better idea once I see the finished product.
I will be asking TAD if they sell a complete kit once I know what I need.
