ParticipantOK I now have my documentation numbers any suggestions for the location for permanently marking in the interior. Any pictures would be great. I can’t remember ever seeing the numbers on boats in the interior before.

According to coast-guard requirements, it should be carved in a beam
somewhere that can’t be mucked with. My boat has vinyl letters stuck to the
forward bulkhead in the v-berth. This is not consistent with what I’ve read
for permanent marking. I suggest carving it into the crossbeam under the
mizzen or a similar place. The whole theory behind carving the documentation numbers into a beam is out
of date. Federal laws now require that the builders serial number be
permanently affixed to the transom. This more or less mitigates the use of
a documentation stamp. You want to be legal however.Regards

Morning Glory’s documentation number was carved into a one by three, the numbers painted black and then the 1 X 3 was glassed in place in the port lazerette. Don’t know if this is the way it is supposed to to be done, but it has worked so far.
By the way, does anybody know the correct way to spell ‘lazerette”?

Thanks Rich.
Here are some interesting tidbits, some of which are a bit humorous.

ModeratorMine’s on the aft bulkhead on the port side over the foot of the bunk in the
aft cabin. It’s a self-adhesive transparency. The only key to having one
mounted is that it has to be easily visible, affixed to the boat in such a
manner that removal would destroy it.Bob

Navasana’s documentation numbers are carved in a teak board that was sitting loose above the bunk in the Vberth. We found it during our survey. the official survey noted the documentation panel was not properly affixed. I glued and screwed it to the starboard interior cabin just forward of the midship companion way.
Last summer we were boarded by USCG in the Gulf of Maine. The office in charge of our inspection noted the location on his report and told me though the panel was not in the right place it was acceptable. I will post a photo later.

john stevensonParticipantMine is in roughly the same location as Bob’s, except inside the cabinet
over the foot of the bunk. I have to remove the drawers to make it
visible. Don’t know why it is there. I guess the PO who documented the
boat didn’t want to waste useful bulkhead space on it.On Thu, Feb 11, 2010 at 10:09 AM, Eric Lorentzon wrote:

SpectatorMine are glassed into the hull in the hanging locker in the v-berth. Looks
like they took vinyl sticky numbers and then glassed over them. Quick and
easy.

ParticipantI guess the wording that the instructions from the Coast Guard: “Arabic
numerals of at least 3 inches in height on some clearly visible interior
structural part of the hull” confuse me a bit. I don’t know that there is a
clearly visible structural part of the hull down below. However I guess a
bulkhead is a structural part of the hull so I can affix a plaque to that
and I will pass. From what you guys have described the Coast Guard is not
as concerned as I am about the number.
So a small plaque screwed to the bulkhead it will be. After the leaking
stanchion bases have been fixed.I hope it’s warm where you are, winter sucks

The doc # on Easy Reach were carved into a beam under a cabin sole hatch by a P.O., upside down, as it were, so it can be easily read while the reader is bent over. The numerals are large and it appear to have been cut with some sort of dremel tool.
