ParticipantWell, here’s the thing.
Once you tell the marina people “anything”, how much are you liable for.
He followed my directions…… to both our satisfaction… could he have done more…. who knows, should he have done more….. It was just a matter of an inch or two to where the Black Dot was that everyone has used..
Next time….. walk away and let them do it on their own….. and let them be totally responsible.
A life lesson…..

OK, walk away, but leave them with the sketch before you do. Then they’ve
got no excuses whatsoever if they mess up.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

ModeratorHi Alan,
When I was at Indiantown and I suppose every other marina, once you sign the
contract for hauling they are essentially not responsible for anything. The
one at Indiantown was so onerous as to not be enforceable in that it removed
all rights from the customer.I told them that (the owner) and he said he knew but it was to cover his
ass.Be careful of the marina’s reputation and their contract for hauling.
I’m not a lawyer, but I do get the general drift. (I don’t play one on TV
either)Anyway, if it was by your direction then I guess you’re right. You’re
screwed.Bob

Bob,
I bought my 424 at Indiantown Marina. Might have stayed there to do the
refit, but the (then new) owner was a virtual Nazi. Rules posted everywhere,
no exceptions, and everything totally one-sided – in his favor, of course.
Personally, I wouldn’t have anything to do the place as long as he’s running
it. Too bad, because otherwise I kind of liked it there. Friendly little
Mexican town, some open Everglades-like countryside to explore. Nice.Tor

ModeratorIt turns out, like in any authoritarian society, one can bend the rules. I,
too, was a bit horrified by the rules and contract. However, they gave me a
slip for half a week at $20.00 per day with electricity, because the haulout
was late in the day, they gave me that day free. Their prices are amazing
for all the stuff they sell.Once you get used to Aaahnald (actually Scott who looks like the Terminator)
running the place you’re free to do pretty much what you like. Here’s what I’ve found – act like an asshole, they’ll treat you that way.
Behave like a civilized adult and you’re golden.I especially liked the Cracker Cafe. Excellent food cheap.
I probably broke all the rules on the boards there except “You are not
allowed to kill other boaters” – really, it turned out ok and I’d go back.
Rebecca, Scott’s wife, is very kind and open to dealing. She’s also hot.
But I digress. The prices for zincs there are 1/2 anywhere else.
Anyway, different people, different experiences. I really liked them beyond
the stupid contract. Having lived in marinas a lot, I know that there are,
um, boaters that, um, make life difficult for the rest of us. That’s who
Scott is trying to protect himself from. It’s hard to do, but I agree he
could have done it with a little more finesse. What do you expect from a terminator, though? 🙂

Bob,
Glad to hear it’s better staying there than I sensed it would be. Maybe
things have settled some since my brief encounter in late 2006. In fact, I
got along well with the management while I was there. I just didn’t like
tiptoeing around to do it.Tor

ParticipantSorry about the damage.
Every time I get SHAY hauled, I have the lift operator stop for 30 seconds after the straps are first tight. Jump aboard, spin the propshaft from inside the boat, give him the “all clear” and walk away. This saves the “breath holding” when hauling.

ParticipantEven though my yard has lifted the boat several times I always turn the
shaft just as he tightens the straps. After I confirm that the prop is not
involved he lifts the boat. Now it’s a habit and he expects it.Linus

ParticipantI guess I’m in good hands here at Ke’ehi Marina. Before thay began to pull the straps, a worker dove the boat to make sure all was OK!

ParticipantLucky guy. If a worker dove the boat in Ft. Lauderdale cutoff canal he’d have to ‘feel’ for the straps and the prop.
