      New “kid” here
Today is our 1 month anni, and we still can’t get the silly grin off, not even trying of course.
Would the group please comment on the pic of the mizzen stays. Is this the standard and why would I want to adjust, slack or tighten the mizzen mast. These lines are well worn, green is the standard color here in the NW. Should it not be all wire?

      Thanks,
      Herbc

      herb,
Replacing the running backstay lines is a minor cost (easy for me to say).
Maybe I need to see that pic, but you only want wire from the mizzen mast
head to the backstay blocks. Actually if I were to replace that wire today
it would be with low stretch rope. I did replace the original blocks and
rope in the first year I owned Sarah. Pics at:

does that work for a pic, sorry,

anyway I have never had an adjustable back stay, understood it to rake the mast for better pointing, but that would surprise me for a cruising ketch.

Must confess my ignorance, am i adjusting the tension on the mizzen to get to the main mast?

      Herbc,

Welcome to the Home of the Elite. Those “adjustable” backstays on the P424’s
mizzen are called “running backstays.” Basically, you leave the leeward stay
loose and keep the windward stay pulled as tight as you can by hand using
the double-purchase blocks provided. The taught “running back” keeps the
mizzen mast from toppling forward in a blow. The slack leeward running
backstay allows the mizzen boom to swing out on the leeward side as far as
it needs to for that tack. As you tack you let the taught running backstay
run free and pull the other one tight so that on the new tack you once again
have the windward running backstay taught and the leeward one loose.

Personally I’d have preferred it if Pearson/Shaw had come up with a less
demanding system back there. Most mizzen masts are simply fix-stayed so
they’re self-tending when tacking. Not so with the P424.

      Reef early,

      Tor

      He, something I can answer….

As part of my re-rig I replaced the wire pendants, existing blocks and lines
      as follows:

26′ standing pendants of 3/16″ Amsteel with eye splices in each with a SS
      thimble on both ends.
Bottom end of the pendant has a Garhauer 25-14US Single Block with Becket
The fiddle blockes were replaced with Garhauer 25-05US Fiddle with cam cleat
      and snap shackle

I dont’ have the lengths for my running part of the stays in my spreadsheet,
but I used 3/8″ XLS Yacht braid with an eye splice in one end to attach it
to the becket on the end of the pendant.

I wish I made my pendants a little shorter as the thimbles touch my bimini
structure. I’ll probably shorten them up when I’m bored some day and the
      clinking is driving me crazy.

just got back from mnf and my team did not win, dang!

thanks for the lesson. While on a broad reach, coming down from Port Townsend we had the mizzen and the genny working for us and moving along on a fair day at 5 n 6 knots it was our first day with the engine off and wee were happy happy. I kept thinking the blocks on the mizzen were there for something but after letting out the mizzen and noticing the backstay was in the way I said no worries cause the genny was doing all the work anyway.

good info and I appreciate the info,
