Hi all,
Since moving on the boat and using the shower pretty much everyday has made fighting the water and scum build up in the seat area in the shower the bain of my existence. We don’t use the space for anything since it never dries out. I was wonderinf if anyone has just filled in the space and sealled it off? And if so, what did you fill it with? I was thinking of using that spray foam stuff and then creating a gasket of sealant around the top edge and screw down the seat cover.
Thanks,
Dawn

ModeratorReally – it’s always wet? I use a cork to seal it .. and then put dirty
shirts and other not so big things with detergent just before we take
off… works great as a small washing machine for us. Does it work for
us because we’re in fresh water?– pat

I keep 3 things in that space: shampoo, a scrubber sponge, and a small
pail. The scrubber sponge is for the dirt ring around the shower pan,
The pail is for catching the cold water that comes from the shower
nozzle before the hot water reaches it, water that would otherwise be
wasted. Then I add a little hot water to it and use it for bathing. The mini clothes washer is a great idea. I do the same thing with a
bucket (with a tight lid), which I lash on the foredeck where the motion
is most amplified. When conserving freshwater, you can wash & rinse
clothes in seawater, and then give a final, frugal rinse in fresh to
remove the salt. Works great!Tor

ModeratorLike Tor, I keep three things in that space – shampoo, a scrubber sponge
(for the same reason) and a fake chamois called ‘The Absorber’ (about $15 at
West Marine, less at auto part stores) for wiping down the shower except for
the ring.Twice a year I clean it super well and wax it with the Starbrite PTFE
cleaner wax and it lasts for quite a while. In addition, I keep the seat top inboard of the head so the pit is always
open and dries. Also, I have a clip with a hook that’s attached to the
middle of the shower curtain. When I’m done, I hook it to the lip under the
portlight so that the curtain dries and there isn’t an area of wet under
plastic on the floor and wall of the pan.Sounds complicated, huh?

RichCarterParticipantMine drains. Not all 424’s are the same however so if yours is holding water you might look at building up the bottom a little to pitch it so that it drains. At that, water will still get in there when you shower so cleaning would be needed. We use X14, a mildew cleaner that works very well.
Hardware stores sell a type of rubber gasket material that is used on home windows as a weather sealant. The stuff comes in a small roll and has two beads of self-sticking gasket. The rubber is soft and makes a good seal. I used this stuff on my ice-box lid to seal it tight. While my lid has been replaced to remove the hinge, the same gasket would work on the hinged top and would probably work on the shower seat. You might keep the water out of the seat-tub, but now you’ll have a gasket to clean 🙁

I really like the ideas! I will try the washing machine idea when we head
out for our trip up to the San Juans in a couple weeks. Have you had any
issues with the sump pump becoming gunked up from the residue from the
detergent? And I am going to search for a bucket to fit in that space to
capture the water.
Thanks guys for the awesome ideas! I am going to keep that space and try it
out.
Thanks,
Dawn
