Can someone either email me the most current OpenCPN User Manual, or else
tell me (with certainty) where I can download it safely? I think I’m on a
safe site where I can read it online, but if they’re offering a way to
download it they are being very discrete about it.Thanks,

At last! A ‘king’s taster.’ Thanks, John. One problem left:
I see no Download User Manual link on that page. There is an “OpenCPN User
Manual” link top/left that opens a Table of Contents on the web page. Or you
can right click on it and Save Target As, but you wind up with a web page of
the manual’s Table of Contents, not a PDF or MS Word file of the entire
manual, which is what I’d expect a user manual to be. Still no Download User
Manual link on the target web page, either. They do offer a
“Printer-friendly version” link, but no friendly download feature there,
either. These guys are very discrete about sharing their “open” program. Or maybe
I’m just failing some pre-user IQ test. That must be it. Call me crazy, but
I would have put a button way back at the beginning that said, “Download
User Manual,” which fetches a good, old-fashioned PDF copy of said manual.Tucked away at the bottom of http://opencpn.org/ocpn/download is an “OpenCPN
Documentation” download. Perhaps our benefactors are disguising this manual
under the pseudonym, “documentation?” However, to download that, you
apparently need a special program to handle the Doc302.7z file. It was a
special zip program that crashed my computer last week, and this web page
features the same damned Big Green Download Button for it. Been there, done
that. Prefer not to do it again. So, amigo, when you say you “just downloaded the OpenCPN document from…
http://opencpn.org/ocpn/download, can you please tell this cyber-dummy
exactly where and how you managed that?Much appreciated,
Tor

ModeratorHi Tor,
Ok, now I understand the problem. The 7zip file is an archive your Windows
can’t read and it looked for a program to read it and you picked the big
green button that gave you something else. I’ve just downloaded the manual
and I’ve extracted it and I’ll re-zip it so you can read it if you want.
Bad news, it’s 20mb, and it’s an HTML manual so you need to read it with a
browser. They’re not being cagey. It’s open source meaning it’s free and they
develop these things for fun and maybe some profit if anyone deigns to
donate. So documentation is last on their list of things to do.
Programmers, by and large, are lazy. Good programmers are very lazy.
Lazy, in this case, is a good thing because they will find the shortest,
easiest way to get a particular function to work.I just checked my OpenCPN and the manual is already installed and I don’t
remember specially doing it. If you start OpenCPN and click on the ?
button what happens?Bob

Thanks, Bob, I would be grateful to receive from you ANY version of the user
manual that doesn’t require me to download that computer-killing program.Boy, these guys really are lazy if they couldn’t be bothered to make a
simple PDF manual. One wonders that they managed to create the program at
all. Oh, well, I guess we get what we pay for. If it’s half as good as you
guys say it is I’ll be thrilled. I have already determined that it can read
my old chart collection, which is why I’m pursuing it. These are charts I
used with Capn Voyager v6, which the v8 does not recognize. (More lazy
programmers!)I suspect the reason my Windows won’t open a 7z file and yours will is
because my dedicated little nav laptop, an old Toughbook I’ve had for years,
runs on XP. Perhaps my main (new) machine, using Windows 7, could open those
files. But I’m not risking this computer with anything from that OpenCPN web
site. Push comes to shove, I could Recover the Toughbook again in a day or
so. My main laptop would take a week.Looking forward to your re-zipped manual.
Thanks again,
Tor

john stevensonParticipantTor,
Yes, I was your taster for the documentation download. Least I could do
after giving you the link that lead to disaster. I’ve downloaded the file,
and Winzip will unzip it. As Bob noted it is a set of HTML files that can
be accessed via your browser. These are the same files as provided with
the OpenCPN download and accessed via the “?” button in OpenCPN, so you
should not have to download anything.Regards,
John Stevenson

ModeratorNo, actually, the reason it doesn’t read 7zip files is because the people
who wrote .zip archive software won’t read competitor’s 7zip archive. That
simple.I’ve made it into a .pdf, but it’s 16 Mb and I’ll have to get it to you
through Google Docs or something because I don’t want to send 16mb files to
everyone in the list. Or, I’ll use a site like ‘sharethis’ or something. If you’ve already installed it, the help files will be installed. This
document looks just like them.Bob

As I mentioned to Bob, clicking on the ? in my OpenCPN does lead to the
manual’s Table of Contents, but nothing more.I should be OK with what Bob’s getting to me.

Bob,
Yes, please do put that manual (in any format besides 7z) somewhere where I
can then download it – without burdening the forum with it.Clicking on the ? in my OpenCPN does lead to the manual’s Table of Contents,
but nothing more.Tor

ModeratorFinally, here’s the link to a .zip file for the HTML version of the
manual. Somewhere in the OpenCPN program directory is a manuals
directory. Unzipping this there should give you a complete set of manuals
as you use the program.https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5btHG0zM5TGWnRkX2E0QXROVnc/edit?usp=sharing
I’ll keep the file up for a while as I mentioned for the .pdf file.

john stevensonParticipantTor,
When you click on the “?” button you should get the “About OpenCPN”
window. Clicking the “Help” tab should open the documentation in your
browser. The first part of the documentation is a table of contents, each
entry in which should be Hyperlinked to the document. If this is not the
case then you may have a bad install.Regards,
John Stevenson

John,
Your description is correct. Guess I have a bad install. Why does that not
surprise me?Rather than continue to screw around with this thing indefinitely I will
download Bob Fine’s manual and then see if the program works. Thanks for your help,
