john stevensonParticipantTor,
My symptom was 30+ years old and some yacht delivery $$ burning a hole in
my pocket. I had the RV20 rebuilt in the first year of my ownership and it
never caused my any problems thereafter. I did have a lot of gear
backlash noise at the time I replaced it, but it turns out that was the
damper plate not the V-drive.
So I guess my decision was based on an expectation it would fail in the
near future and I could afford the replacement so it must be time to do it.
I didn’t inspect the RV20 or have it analyzed after it was removed. It
might have lasted another 30 years.Regards,
John Stevenson

ParticipantTor,
From my experience Walters machining company is a great company to work with. I think if you talk to the owner he’ll tell you what to look for on whether to replace the RV 20 with the RV 26. in my experience I thought it was cheaper to have it rebuilt then to go through all of the hassles of putting the new RV 26 in. Plus the rv 26 is not cheap. if you get it rebuilt and you get another 10 years out of it. I think you did ok.
In my case the seals were leaking and I had out of the boat anyhow, so I just had it rebuilt.

RichCarterParticipantTor,
The case cooling jacket will eventually leak into the gearbox. You can tell
by pulling the dip-stick up to check the level. If you see that the oil is
the color of chocolate milk, you have a leak. The bearings will fail from
corrosion. It takes about 30 years for the jacket to rust through. You
used to be able to replace the RV-20 cases but they are no longer available.
The only real option is to replace with an RV-26.More info here.

We were getting a lot of vibration and scheduled to have the v-drive
mounts replaced (rusted). On the way to the yard it started throwing
oil. The jack shaft was out of balance and the seals failed. We
shipped it to the manufacturer for their appraisal and they reported
they did not have the parts needed to repair it.On 4/8/2013 7:29 PM, Silverheels wrote:

ParticipantWe knew it was time to replace the v-drive when it froze up in the Bahamas. The good news was the sail back to Fl. M.J. Sherman on Nokomis (#183).
