Madsailor/Bob just mentioned…..in the last subject Sea Chest while answering my questions (thanks Bob)
I plan on hauling my boat later this summer and removing at least 7 though
hulls. 4 deck drains, 1 sink drain in the v-berth (where I also plan on
removing the non used sink), moving the bilge pump discharges from the side
of the boat to the transom and teeing the shower sump to the galley sink
drain removing the through hull for that. If I could remove more I would. The deck drains will elbow out to the hull just below the cove stripe. I
know there will be black marks. Better that than failed underwater valves.I totally understand reducing holes in the boat and I no doubt will as much as possible when I have the opportunity. Has anyone done anything different than what Bob is planning for his deck drains? I’d imagine you checked around Bob. I thought I might have read somewhere about attempting to cut scuppers on that decks, maybe I’m wrong. I have a vague memory of these extra thu-hulls while readying for delivery on my friends P424 so many years ago. Are these large (1 1/2″) gate valves. If they are, I sure would like to trash them too!

ParticipantKen,
I shared this summary of my War on Thru-Hulls with the group 6 years ago.
Removing and sealing up half the thru-hulls was only half the battle. The
other half was re-plumbing to share the remaining fittings among a multitude
of users:Silver Heels’ Thru-Hull Assignment List, 12/2007
================================================Below-Waterline T-hull, Starboard Side #1
Intake to sea chest, which feeds the following:
– galley sink
– watermaker
– toilet
– anchor/foredeck wash-down
– bilge sump wash-down hoseBelow-Waterline T-hull, Starboard Side #2
– engine raw water intakeBelow-Waterline T-hull, Port Side #1
– galley sink drainBelow-Waterline T-hull, Port Side #2
– holding tank overboard pump discharge
– toilet dischargeAbove-Waterline T-hull, Starboard Side #1
– midship side deck scupper
– electric bilge pump discharge
– shower sump discharge
– watermaker discharge
– head sink drainAbove-Waterline T-hull, Starboard Side #2
– aft side deck scupper
– starboard cockpit drainAbove-Waterline T-hull, Port Side #1
– midship side deck scupperAbove-Waterline T-hull, Port Side #2
– aft side deck scupper
– port cockpit drainAbove-Waterline T-hull, Transom #1
– manual bilge pump dischargeAbove-Waterline T-hull, Transom #2
– engine exhaustThere is also a small hole in the transom, well above the waterline, for the
propane locker drain. One issue I encountered on my boat was that many of the “above the
waterline” thru-hulls were, in fact, at or slightly below the present,
raised waterline. So where I needed to keep the fitting, I removed and
re-installed it a little higher up, sealing the original hole. I opted to
get rid of the forward cabin sink altogether, which used to drain through
its own below-waterline seacock. The depth sounder transducer did not need
to be thru-hull, and I scrapped the speed log wheel, which didn’t work
anyway, and sealed the hole.Even with all this, I still have 10 holes in my hull, albeit only 4 of them
below the waterline. There is room for improvement, for further thru-hull
reductions, which I may get to in the future. For example, the manual bilge
pump could share some other thru-hull exit.Tor

Tor, I saw this list yesterday and had it mentally stored for future reference when I get poking about in detail on the new boat. I know the PO re-did a lot of the plumbing, I just haven’t had the opportunity to know in detail and to what extent he tried to minimize the amount of thru-hulls.
I remember asking him as we were going through the boat, how many and it was kind of a blank stare with a tilted head and he said, “a lot”. We have the additional head forward also…for now! I’ll take it as it comes for now.As long as they can be gotten too reasonably well. Are there any of the originals that are really way out of the way and hard to access?

I’m not being terse. This is from my mobile.

some more conveniently than others.Tor

ModeratorOh, no, nothing so simple. It’s directly under the center of the head’s
floor. Impossible to reach from the hatch over the v-drive or the forward
one. At least that’s where it is in my boat. Hull #8.Bob
