ParticipantAll,
Finally – the dodger was collected from the paint shop and is in place.
Next item is to get the windows installed. Plan is for glass rather than plexi-glass.

It looks great! If I can offer this: get safety glass rather than
tempered glass.Bob

ParticipantThanks Bob.
The window man will be sorting templates first. I will confirm on the glass type.
I was surprized when he said that they bend the glass to fit the shape, depending on whether the profile is within the bendable range. If the bend is excessive then we will have to use plexi-glass. The sides, being flat, will be easily achievable with glass.Cheers

The front windows are curved? That’s expensive…

Dennis,
That’s a fine looking hard dodger. It complements the boat
perfectly. You know, one of the very first modifications I made to my 424
when I bought her, before I even had a spray dodger in place, was
to move the primary winches aft to outboard of the wheel
binnacle. This opened up the passageway between the cockpit and
the side decks, which was sorely needed for safe sailing in my
opinion. It also put the winches within reach of the helmsperson,
so that a he/she could tack the boat without an experienced crew
in the cockpit to handle the genoa sheets. (They’re still
accessible to crew, too.) The change was an immediately obvious
no-brainer to me. I still wonder what Shaw/Pearson were thinking
when they placed them where they did.Looking at your photos, I was reminded just how bad that original
winch placement was, only it’s amplified by your beautiful new
dodger. It’s going to be challenging, if not downright dangerous,
to step through there in lively conditions.Just a thought.

Miss Kathleen
ParticipantTor,
Seeing some of the changes on other 424’s, the relocation of the winches is next.
Currently the support for the bimini is where the winches will go.I have just started making a hard-top bimini which will have supports rising from the stern and along the backstays.
By the way, the original spray dodger really protruded into the passageway. The new dodger is a vast improvement.
Cheers

Miss Kathleen
ParticipantHi All,
Dodger is 99% complete. Windows are in! A hand-hold or and we are done.
Have since relocated the winches further aft.

Miss Kathleen
ParticipantHi Guys,
Tor, the front window does not open. being curved it would have been a real challenge. The sides are real glass. The front is plexi-glass.
Joe, I dumped the normal bimini and constructed two frames that will support a hard-top bimini. This is a WIP and hopefully will be completed soon. Need this before we go off for Christmas as it supports two solar panels. I will post some pics once done.
Cheers
Dennis
