Don’t bother, it’s Whoosh. I can tell from the main boom rigging, which
I’d like to emulate someday. Actually, I’d like to emulate Jack and Pat
      someday.

Looks like a nice, clean boat, but I wish them luck getting $189k for her!

Am I just ego-tripping here, or am I the only owner of an aft-cockpit ketch
who has a bimini top that actually allows access to the mizzen sail?

      Hi Elaine,

How do you identify its Whoosh? She had her name on her and didn’t use her
      main traveller.

They are originally from St. Petersburg, FL,  also.  Ted and I were on Whoosh before they left for the Puddle Jump last year.  Look at picture #18.  You will see Whoosh Logbook in the photo.

Looks like Whoosh to me, and I know they plan to sell her in OZ. Jack
told me that Aussies pay incredible prices for yachts and homes and the $aus
and $us are at about parity. So this may not be such an unrealistic price –
that is until the Australian bubble bursts like it has everywhere else.

If they get that price, Lady Leanne is on the block. I’m halfway to Aus already.

Moreover, Whoosh looks better than the day it left the factory. And their
creative main traveler system is both a traveler, boom brake, and preventer
and vang all in one (or two) tackles. Downside was the tackles crossed the
side decks. Upside, safe, easy to manage from the cockpit, and hugely
      strong.

I just hope they’re alright. They are, to me, the epitome of graciousness
associated with sailing and yachting, like the Hiscocks and Pardeys and
      Fatty Goodlander.

I think our boats have advanced in price relative to other similar alternative boats. And I think there is good reason. There are boats that are better primarily in their interior joinery that were fetching twice what a 424 would get, but now our boats seem to be coming closer to a value parity.

I saw the boat that is under contract on yachtworld at $58k, and she was homely in person. Seems like nice examples of the 424 should sport asking prices in the high 5 digits. I know of two sales in the very low 6 digits lying east coast US. I don’t know what it costs to ship a boat to OZ, but it has to be upward of $50K if super servant from Newport to St Johns is close to $20K

      Walter,

If Pearson 424’s “have advanced in price relative to other similar
alternative boats,” I suspect it’s because this new generation of owners –
we – have collectively raised the average quality of these boats through
extensive renovation and upgrading. The 424’s that haven’t been refurbished
are still relatively cheap, often justifiably so. After 30 years of owner
neglect some aren’t even worth $50k.

Bottom line: A boat is worth what someone is willing to pay for her; no
more, no less. I believe I could sell Silver Heels in the US for about $100k
simply because a buyer would be hard pressed to find a better, more
cruise-worthy sailboat of this size and type anywhere for that price. Would
she fetch more in Australia? I guess we’ll find out when Whoosh sells.

As for transporting boats to/from the South Pacific, about 5 years ago some
friends of mine shipped their Bermuda 40 back from New Zealand for around
$10k, or so they said. I figured it has probably doubled since then, but I
      haven’t checked.

I’m sure there are a variety of ways to ship a boat, but I doubt any would come
in as cheaply as $10 or $20k. I have a recent quote from Dockwise and they
quoted $36,100.00 to ship a boat from Ft. Lauderdale to Vancouver. Other methods
could be cheaper, but would also involve unstepping the mast, pulling rigging,
etc. (all of which will be full of potential additional expenses, at both the
      delivery and shipping points).

Well, when all else fails (or costs too much), I guess we could always put
up the sails and see what happens.
