424’s have encapuslated keels – meaning the lead ballast is glassed over and molded into the hull.

I’m not on my boat right now, but I don’t remember ever seeing keel bolts. Do our 424’s have keel bolts in addition to the ballast being glassed in? I don’t think they do.

I’m relatively new to the 424 world but as Ryan said, 424’s have encapsulated keels and that’s part of why I bought a Pearson. They are not bolted to the hull. Either your surveyor confused a Pearson with another manufacturer or he might not be the best surveyor for a Pearson or both.

i ask this because my survey mention it could be a big problem . i didnt think the 424 had keel bolts. i did find a discussion about it and they claim that there are bronze j bolts 5/8 in diameter ?? just would like to know . is the encapsulation strong enough ?? can it be renforced? just a newby

they were talking about the pearson 36 1971

The good news is that the lead keels are “J” bolted to the keel stub with 5/8″ bronze threaded rods and then all glued up with polyester resin. The keel won’t fall off even without nuts on the bolts.

Another vote for never using that surveyor again. BIG difference between those boats.

The 424 does have 4 bolts holding the strut in, however. They’re right under the engine, toward the transmission…and near impossible to get to. The good news is that, after 34 years, the nuts on mine were nice and snug. I.e. nothing to worry about.
