How much additional weight do you plan on adding via this method and how do you think it will affect how she sails? I think steve was saying his pulling his 400′ of chain rode into the bilge allowed him to point slightly higher.

I’m not really looking at adding a lot of weight. I’ve spoken to several people in the cement business and they have a product they claim will bond to the existing FRP (I’ll have to thoroughly degrease the bilge first) but weighs about half what Portland cement weighs. The bottom line is I’ll add about 150 – 200 pounds. But because the weight will be down low in the water the righting moment will be greater than I the same weight was sitting three fet higher in the boat. Earl Chappell, a fellow 424 owner (Painkiller), put regular cement in his bilge to strengthen what he considers the weakest part of the boat and, most importantly, make the bilge more useful as a storage space.

Regarding the weight of the chain in the bilge, Spirit came that way from the previous owners so I don’t know how it feels without it. My only empirical data I have comparing with and without is a video I watched of a race finish with Spirit and a 424 Sloop. We passed by the sloop pretty quickly, our bow was quite a bit higher because it didn’t have the weight. We finished the race, tacked back, then tacked behind the Sloop and proceeded to beat it again. Spirit is Ketch rigged.
Other than that, it has always just been a good feeling having the extra weight down there…
