I’m buying a custom fitted mattress for my aft cabin bunk. After a lot of shopping around, I found an outfit
in North Carolina (http://www.riversidemattressinc.com) that manufacturers a line of household spring mattresses, but
also makes them for boats, even cutting the beveled edge once you’ve supplied them with a pattern. The custom
boat mattress salesmen I queried at the Annapolis boat show were charging around $1,600 for what I wanted,
plus shipping and maybe sales tax, depending. These guys in North Carolina charge $500-to-$600, plus 8% sales
tax if you’re in NC, plus $75-100 shipping.

This factory has been supplying all the mattresses to Beneteau USA for the past 5 years. I just checked one
out on a Beneteau anchored near me and it’s a decent mattress, not earth-shattering best in the world, but
IMHO as good as or better than 4″ of foam rubber and likely to last much longer. For their “marine” spring
mattress, which is 5-1/2″ to 6″ high, the maker powder-coats the metal parts inside to resist rust.

They said I could order my mattress extra firm, which I will do because the one I tried in a 2008 Beneteau
next door was softer than I like. They’re sending me some material to make a pattern. Once I’ve sent that
back, it takes them about a week to build the mattress, and a day or two to ship it.

If anyone would like one of these mattresses for your 424’s aft cabin bunk, let me know ASAP. As with the mast
pulpits, if several of us order at once we may be able to get a group rate. Please call the factory directly
      with your specific questions.

Will the mattress be hinged or in two pieces? It seems a mattress that size
would be very hard to get in the cabin.

      Linus,

Good point! They probably can hinge or cut it, but I suspect it’ll bend enough to get through the companionway. The one I tested in that Beneteau seemed flexible enough. Anyway, I’ll ask them just to be sure.

      Tor,
The other reason for a hinge is easy access to the lockers under the head and foot of the bunk.  If they don't charge an exorbitant fee, I highly recommend a hinge.

      John,

By golly, why didn’t I think of that? An athwartships hinge just forward of the water heater locker would make a lot of sense. My present foam rubber mattress folds easily enough for access if I tie a line around it, but this spring mattress (ordered extra firm) probably won’t. Thanks!

I’ve just asked the manufacturer about fitting the mattress through the companionway and they recommended a hinge. So now I have to take some measurements to determine whether athwartships or lengthwise will work best.

      Tor,
Here's a link to a picture of the the hinge I have in my mattress.
      http://www.svsarah.com/Sarah/Images/Mattress 1.JPG

If I slide it forward I have good access to the locker under the foot of the bunk.  I still have to lift it to gain access to the middle locker.  I can fold the mattress like this when it is made up without disturbing the bedding, just have to move the pillows.  Making up the bed is much easier as I can slide the mattress forward to fit the sheets and blankets under the foot of the mattress, then slide it back in place.
A lengthwise hinge would make it easier to move the mattress into and out of the cabin.  With this single cross-wise hinge I have to use a strap to fold the mattress into a small enough bundle to get through the companionway, but then I've only had to move the mattress out of the aft cabin once – when re-powering.

      John,

Nice looking mattress. Is it cut to fit the sloping hull outboard? (Can’t tell from that photo.) Where’d you get it?

Thanks for the photo & input. I’ll be back aboard Silver Heels in half an hour and will measure to figure things out. As long as I can physically get the mattress into the cabin, I’m much more concerned with ease of access to the lockers underneath than with the companionway.

Ted and I would be interested in ordering with you. We have checked the Miami Boat Show every year and the mattresses are pricey.

      Tor & Elaine,
My mattress was made by HMC (Handmade Mattress Company), which is one of those companies at the boat shows that give everyone sticker shock.  When I purchased mine in 2002 it was pretty pricey then too, but still less than a boat unit ($900).  It appears the prices have gone up dramatically in the last seven years.
I purchased mine through the local HMC dealer in Annapolis at the boat show in 2002.  He came to the boat in Solomons and measured the berth.  Yes, the outer edge of the mattress is beveled to match the hull.  It even has a notch for the chainplate cover at the head of the bunk.
This is the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on, ashore or on the boat, It is 7″ Latex foam.

      Elaine & Ted,

I just asked if they’ll give a price break for two or more of them. Will let you know what they say. I’m sure you won’t have to order extra firm as I am doing, if you don’t want that, but perhaps you will want the hinge for the same reason I do.

FYI, the factory just told me the charge for extra firm is $30 and the charge for the hinge is $35.

JS: “…the most comfortable mattress “

I hope I’ll be able to say the same about the one I’m ordering. Since it’s costing less than half of those boat show beauties and twice the price of high density foam rubber, I expect it’ll be somewhere in between comfort-wise, too. Guess I’ll find out when it’s in the boat. I already have those Froli plastic under-springs, which might enhance things.

      Elaine & Ted,

The mattress factory said there is no discount on 2 or 3 mattresses, so you might as well order direct from them (http://www.riversidemattressinc.com). If you want to trust my template you can tell them to use that for yours, too. They know me as Tor Pinney, Maritime Services Inc. Or you can wait until I’ve got my new mattress in a couple of weeks and I’ll tell you how good the fit is, etc.

      Thanks Tor,

We will wait until you get your and see what you think about it since there is no discount for ordering at the same time.
