I’m replacing my anchor chain, 3/8 ht x 200 ft. I’ve previously painted stripes on the chain every ten feet so that I can tell how much chain is out there. The pain works but must be renewed each year. I see some plastic markers available that look durable but I wonder if they stay in place or pop out and get lost. Has anyone used these?

      Hi Rich,

Go to Home Depot and get a container of the florescent wire ties – then
place them at the intervals you like, a pair at a time. They will go
through the windlass but eventually will fall off. However, they’re cheap
and easy to replace. And there isn’t a problem seeing them.

+1 on Bob’s recommendation of colored wire ties. All of the paint on the
first 75′ of my chain disappeared after one winter anchored in the Bahamas.
I replaced those markers with wire ties in 2009 and most of them are still
      there.

I have been using the plastic markers that fit into the links for ten years now and they work great. I am in the Virgin Islands today on our way back to Florida after 11 years based in Trinidad and Venezuela. Also time out for 8.5 months to sail with friends from Trinidad to Australia. Rich,

I’ve tried paint but it wears off too soon. I’ve tried plastic tie wraps but
they get brittle and snap off. Now I have a soft plastic label with the actual
numbers of feet which is very handy because you can actually read the depth and
not have to count how many ties have passed and they are different colors for
each depth too in case you miss the number when the chain goes by quickly. I
like these a lot and recommend them. I think I bought them at a Budget Marine,
but I’m sure you can find them elsewhere.

      Joe,
Are you talking about Rainbow Markers that go inside the chain link? I
haven’t found a source in the US.

I haven’t seen them in the US either. Budget Marine had them in Simpson Bay, St. Maartin. I should have brought them……

I have used a similar and quite inexpensive scheme that I read about years
      ago.
I purchased a few lengths of 1/4 inch, three strand polypropylene line of
different colors, unlaid the strands and cut them into about one foot
lengths. I marked the chain at 25 foot intervals by weaving the strands
through several links. One length at 25 feet, two lengths (in tandem) at 50
feet, three at 75 feet, four at 100 feet then repeated with a different
color for the next 100 feet etc. White and yellow line seem to be the most
visible. Surprisingly durable. I replaced them last year for the first time
in eight or nine years when I reversed the chain.

No !  These markers fall out. I tried them.
I’m talking about a strip of flexible tape with numerals printed on them. I’ll
try to find them and send you a link.

Yes, these are the markers I was asking about. Has anyone used them and do they last?

      Rich,
I’ve tried these but they pop out easily. I find that the chain will twist as it
comes over the roller and onto to my windlass and before it untwists the pastic
insert pops out. I suppose with a new chain that might not occur as there is
      less tendency for twist.

I used the labels which are designed for inserting through nylon rode.
