Just so I understand, I have an “anchor” locker, that
is accessed from an opening on the deck. (the large
hatch at the pointy end of the boat). Below the
“anchor” locker, is a rather large space where the
chain is stored, the “chain” locker. The chain goes
through the “anchor” locker into the “chain” locker,
      via a pvc pipe.
More or less, is that what everyone else has?
My “anchor” locker is about 10 inches deep, sloping
down towards the bow where it’s about 18 inches deep.

      Alan,

Yes, I believe you’ve got the terminology right. Some of us just mix up the words sometimes in the excitement of the
moment. Then, while sipping good Barbados rum on a Friday evening, one might continue with limber hole, cleft of the
lower stem (I made that up), vortex of the foremost bilge (I made that up, too), flattish depression (forward of the
mainmast step), shallow bilge (above the ballast), the Great Precipice, and what I call the sump of the bilge.

Well, the reason I mentioned it is, last year, I
finished installing the deck fittings for the Solent
Stay. I had used the drawings provided by Jack Tyler,
and I believe John Stevenson. Never gave it a thought
and had the parts made. When I went to install the
backing plate inside the anchor locker, I discovered,
much to my dismay, The plate was too long. I am
thinking maybe my locker is a bit shallow compared to
other 424’s. No panic though, I just drilled another
set of holes (3/8’s stainless) and mounted the plate
      sideways.
Rum on a Friday evening, imagine that. Barbacourt?

Come to think of it, Alan, maybe it’s “anchor well,” not “anchor locker.” Anyway, it’s definitely Mount Gay, not
Barbancourt (which I believe is Haitian, not Barbadian).

      Alan,
Yes I think there may be several different version of the anchor well out, not counting thoe that have been modified by owners. I had the same problem with the backing plate on the bulkhead aft of the anchor well and chain locker, and did the same thing – turned the plate sideways and mounted it inside the chain locker. There's no backing plate in the anchor well, just fender washers. I got my design from Jack and he got his from Hal Sutphen, but I never inquired about how they fitted a backing plate.
