      Colin Mack finally convinced me to go with Spectra halyards. I have a
      set (main and mizzen) of rope/wire halyards available to a good home for
      a donation plus shipping. And by the way, love our new set of Mack
      sails! Such attention to detail. Just awesome.

      hi Pete , I’m about to do the same. Any issues with the masthead sheaves. What size did you use for Mizzen and Main. any tips for running the new lines. Thanks, Allan.

      Allan,
      I’m sure Pete will provide a lot of detail on his halyard conversion.
      Here’s a link to my web page
      <http://www.svsarah.com/Sarah/ewUpgrade2003Rigging.htm#Spreader/Foredeck
      Light> on converting Sarah’s halyard from external wire/rope to internal
      rope. I went with 1/2″ Sta-SetX and I did replace the sheaves – although
      the existing aluminum wire/rope sheaves would probably work fine. I had
      Rig-Rite fabricate the main mast sheaves, but
      several other owners have used Zephyrwerks .

      I still favor an all-wire halyard for roller-furling headsails.
      Several clear advantages and no downside that I know of.

      I replaced mine with low-stretch halyards years ago and never looked back. The only issue I can think of is the splice is thicker than the rest of the line. It may be possible to jam the halyard in the sheave if you somehow pull the sail up too high. Wire halyards eat the winch drum and cut a groove in the sheaves. My mainsail winch is pretty badly gouged from the wire.

      Instead of making splices, I use a halyard knot which does two things. 1;
      it allows hoist to the very top without jamming in the sheave, and 2;
      allows repairing the shackle end without losing more than about 6″ or so.

      That’s probably a good idea. It avoids the extra charge of a splice too. Some of you out there probably have the patience to splice braid, but I’ve never had the energy. I’ve used a bowline in the past; never thought of a halyard knot. I use a bowline in one form or another for almost everything except tying my shoes. I suppose I could tie my shoes with a bowline but the laces are so darn small!

      Splicing is easy and as many times as I’ve done it, I’ve tried to cut corners. I’ve learned one thing….follow the directions and have a bottle of rum handy.

      Hello. Sorry for busting into your thread but I’m having trouble accessing the pearson424.org site from which I registered for this mailing list. After many failed attempts to register, I’ve resorted to responding here. I am interested in learning more about the 424 for possible purchase.
      Is there a moderator that may help?

      James, you’ll get more information than you could possibly want. Go ahead
      and start a new thread on the mail list and I’m sure you’ll get what you
      need.
