      John,
What happened to your autopilot? Type, manufacturer, failure mode etc…..
I’d be interested to know the details.
      thanks

I think a lot of “autopilot failures”, particularly those attributed to
the control head of Autohelm units are actually just a need to conduct
the calibration procedure again. I know that mine has gone crazy at the
beginning of the year after storage with its power off. Seems it
somehow lost its bearings and calibration. The set-up procedure is
easy enough… after putting it in the right mode, you slowly motor in a
      large circle. (see the manual).

I am sure that’s true, although in John’s case according to his Blog, it failed on his way to Tortola and he replaced it after he arrived there. I was curious as to his particular unit and exact failure.

Morning Glory had an Autohelm autopilot installed when I bought he but it did
not have any instructions. Where can I get a copy of the manual for an Autohelm
      7000?

      Lee,
Raymarine provides many of manuals for the old Autohelm/Ratheon products for
      download from their website.

      For example:

I have a web depository of all my manuals here:

      http://www.dublerfamily.com/Regina_oceani/Manuals/

      Look under Raymarine Instruments.

It would be interesting to know how many autopilot failures were due to drive failures and how many were electronics failures.
We lost our autopilot coming out the St. Mary’s river two years ago heading north. The Nexus electronic servo unit failed but the Octopus hydraulic drive was fine.
A friend who is a retired Navy electronics engineer suggested we might have encountered Navy degaussing equipment in the inlet. Our heading compass was 90 degrees out for a while.

One of the very nice things about the Octopus hydraulic drive is that it is repairable in the cockpit with a minimum of tools and a very simple, inexpensive repair kit.

It is a Cetek Benmar, Rotary Drive unit. The drive unit failed outright off Hatteras….I suspect the cause was a leaking bilge pump over the unit. I climbed into the aft lazzeret to work on it and was there from 9PM to 3AM….I took the unit apart and then had to figure how to put it back together. So I really don’t know….I guess 30 years and an offshore passage are what killed it.

Once together, it has been behaving strangely…I figure I have 18 plus hours in the aft lazzeret plus the hassle of shipping parts back and forth to California from the BVI as a result I have decided to replace the entire unit. The
