For those out there who have sloops and cutters. As I mentioned earlier, one of my winter projects is to reinforce the transom where the backstay chainplate attaches. After some discussion with my rigger, here’s what we came up with.

I just ordered three feet of 2″x2″ 1/4″ 316 stainless angle stock. I’ll cut it in half and fabricate a ‘T’ section with it. This will become the new chainplate. The two halves will be bolted together and then fastened to the transom using two rows of bolts. The top will have a single half-inch hole cut to accept a clevis pin for the backstay toggle.

I’ll do some glasswork inside the aft locker to repair cracks that have developed near the chainplate. I’ll also provide some reinforcement in the same area.

I’ll purchase some steel angle iron and fabricate a triangular steel brace that will be mounted below deck. It will mate up with the hole pattern in the backstay. It will also bolt to the underside of the aft combing deck. This will transfer some of the rigging load to the deck. The deck is cored with about 2″ of marine plywood, so it should take the load with no problem. I see no need to use stainless belowdeck. I’ll give it a good coating of paint.
