ParticipantHello Guys
I added a battery box just aft of the engine bed. This seemed like the best place for the start battery. I have measured five times to be sure. I know that it will be a tight fit but I am using AGM’s so I only need access for switching out the battery. Should be only every 5 years or so (I hope Tor is right). Of course if the engine is too big the box will have to come out. For now that is my plan. Soon to follow: pictures of the new engine, soon in the world of work on my days off maybe a week or two.

Linus,
I hope we get 5 years and more from the AGM’s, too. There seems to be some skepticism regarding their longevity, maybe because the product just hasn’t been around long enough to prove (or disprove) itself. I bought AGM’s under the impression they were the latest, greatest improvement after the gel batteries with which I was so pleased on my last boat. We’ll see.
In the photo it appears you’ve already built in that battery box so maybe you’re committed to it now. However, it may not be the best place for a battery. My understanding has long been that batteries suffer from a hot environment; that they live much longer in cooler compartments away from the engine. My starter battery is in the bottom inboard corner of the so-called wet locker immediately to starboard of the main companionway. It’s as close to the engine as your box is, but has a bulkhead separating the battery from the heat.

ParticipantAdam, Tor
I am planning to run the 4″ duct right above the battery box and hope the engine compartment does not get too hot. I will have to check with the battery specialist as to how much heat the battery can stand. As far as AGM batteries I have an Odyssey that has been in an 18′ fishing boat that has been in service for 6 years and shows no sign of slowing down. That battery gets no where near the attention that the batteries on the sailboat get. I had looked at the bottom of the hanging locker but with the cockpit drain in there it just looked like I would lose the whole locker if I stuck the battery in there. Tor let me know when you will start the trip up north. I hope to meet you when you make Beaufort or even Oriental.
