Generally agree to re-use cables if they are igood condition, but check the one that ran under the engine to starter. At firs look appeared to be OK,- but on close examination and cutting open I found a lot of corrision in the middle of the cable. I then made the big plunge and replaced everything – even used red.

      Hi Linus,

There’s no reason not to use the current wires. When I rewired my batteries, I found the same thing (except the red wires were also black, if you get my drift). I replaced only the red wires with marine cable and whatever new cables I needed in black with marine black.Â

The yard will, indeed, want to put in new marine wire, but unless your wiring closet and so forth are always wet, I wouldn’t bother.

That said, cable is cheap. Ok, not cheap, but not too expensive so if the yard is rewiring, the cost of new cable won’t be the major expense. It will be the labor, which you’re already paying for (the incremental cost of pulling a few extra feet of cable is minimal).

It took me two full days to rewire my batteries and rewire the battery switch. You can see what I did on my blog, http://thesailinglife.blogspot.com – look back in June-August 07 articles in the archives.

Guys  I pulled all the wires connected to the battery and switch today. All the battery cables were black. They are in great shape. I cut the terminal off and the wire is a shiny as a new penny. Do you think it’ll be OK to reuse the back as my negatives. I know that the yard is going to tell me that I need to use marine wire. This wire still looks good after almost 30 years I think unless there is a really good reason I will go back with the same. Linus

I hate to be the wet blanket on this discussion, but isn’t the current ABYC code call for red and yellow Now?

Are you saying the corrosion was not evident on the end but when you cut the wire the was a bad spot in the middle? If so was there a bad spot in the insulation?

Correct… The cable looked ok at the ends, but my friend who is in electonic (aircraft and other special low voltage applications) ran his hand along the cable and could feel that the cable was not smooth inside. The cable over the years had absorbed water that had collected under the engine.
