My blower is shot. I can tell because it screams like the dickens when I turn it on. My question for this august group is: do I need to replace it with a new blower or can I get along without a blower? will a vent suffice? The only time I’ve used it is when I dock after a motoring to my slip.
One more data point: I have a Genie 150 generator in the aft lazerette which keeps the batteries charged up, but it is water cooled by a heat exchanger.Lee

ParticipantLee, Could you please take some pictures of your Genie in the aft Laz? I am starting to layout the mounts for mine and could use a few hints. Did you do the install?

The Genie was already in the boat when I bought her. I am currently in Gig Harbor, WA and Morning Glory is sitting at Brunswick, GA. I won’t return to GA until the first week in August. I will ask a friend to take pictures and sent them to you. It might take a few days so be patient.

Lee,
I scrapped my boat’s bilge blower system altogether – yanked the whole thing out, hoses, blowers & all. I’m not clear on why it was there in the first place, except maybe as an habitual remnant of the old fume evacuation systems they used to put in boats that had gasoline-fueled engines.

ParticipantThe PO must have removed the blower from my boat. I’ve never missed it and wonder why you would need one if the boat is diesel.
My other yacht is a Hunter 33.5 with a Yanmar. It’s never had a blower since I bought it new (1988).

ParticipantWell, I can say that based on our trip down the ICW last Fall, the blower does make a pretty good hand warmer.

ParticipantLee,
My blower motor did the same thing. I took it out and cleaned it off and lubricated it and it now works fine. I turn it on from time to time to get rid if stagnent air in the bilge.

ParticipantAh! The boat is in the south! The screaming blower is probably dirt dobbers. The buggers build their clay hotels in every place they can squeeze into. I had the same sound and it cleared up when I got the nest out. They make a mess all over the boat. You should also make sure the drain to the LP locker is clear.
After all the talk about the vents earlier I think I will take out one of the bilge vents, my lazerette is full of hoses. With the gooseneck on the transom the exhaust is all over the place in there. Getting one 4″ hose out sure would help clear things up a bit.Linus
