      Greetings All,

I am a new P-424 owner and of course relatively new to this list. I bought BobKat in April during a return trip to the US from the estate of John Williams and understand that she had been idle for a year or more. I moved back to the US in June and moved aboard in July. We have her moored at Watergate Marina south of Houston, Texas. Unfortunately my Singaporean wife is still overseas awaiting issuance of her immigration visa, but that is another long story.

BobKat is the original name of this boat and was retained throughout 3 previous owners. I read in John’s log that she was named after the original owners, Bob and Katherine. My wife Mei Han and I decided it would be better to take on the boat’s name rather than break a tradition, so I now call her Kat from time to time, and she calls me Bob, which is the pseudonym I have used anyway for years when salespersons or other such cranks ask.

As you can well imagine, we have a whole bunch of repairs and upgrades to do, some of which I see discussed on this website. I hope to tap y’all’s many years of experience in my on going projects.

We are excited about becoming a part of the P-424 community!

Welcome, Stephen.  We are also relatively new to the 424, planning upgrades in 2016 to move aboard for a year in 2017.  We kept Blue Moon?s name as well, as we did Sanctuary?s name (a Caliber 33) before her. Both great boats.  I know you?ll have a great time with BobKat and look forward to following your adventures.  Everyone on this site is very nice and open with suggestions/advice. DavidBlue Moon, #189

Many thanks, Dave. I have been impressed with the level of technical knowledge on this site, in particular in regards to engines. I am not very knowledgeable or experienced in this regards.

I have seen some excellent project notes on this and some other owner’s sites such as renewing the overhead liner panels. Once my wife, my project partner, gets here will be tackling that one in conjunction with rebedding all of the deck gear.

One of the projects that I have started is rebedding all of the “eyebrow” trim above the port lights. Weather and my day job has been hampering my progress a bit. The one piece that I removed so far has a channel cut into the back of it, which I found strange. I drilled out the screw holes oversized and have filled them with epoxy and was planning on using 4200 as a sealant, but this channel kinda threw me. Don’t understand or see the value in it; in fact there was a whole world of mold growing behind and below this piece.

Wondered if anyone on here has rebedded their eyebrow trim and has seen the same thing; take a heck of a lot of caulking to fill these channels, but I hate to leave them open and just caulk the screw areas; mold breeding grounds. Maybe they have a reasonable purpose?

Thanks again, David for the welcome.

Many thanks, Jack, and yes I agree, not much better than piddling around boats. My wife, who is Singaporean is actually my project partner. She loves working with tools and is an artist, so she can sometimes see solutions that I do not. Will be glad when Immigrations approves her application to immigrate here.

We rebuild a 1973 Westerly Jouster 21 in Singapore from the hull up. Took us a good bit of time and money and sweat equitity, but turned out real nice.

Looking forward to engaging the group as we move ahead.

Hi Stephen, No doubt others here have successfully bedded those brow pieces. I tried and failed a couple of times. They just seemed designed to leak, plus mine were cracking from age and PO neglect. So I scrapped them altogether, filled the screw holes, and painted a 1" stripe in their stead, the color matching Silverheels’ cove & boot stripes. IMHO, it looks better, it certainly reduced maintenance, and it doesn’t leak. I’m sure there is much gratification in restoring things to their original glory on these good old boats, but the greater fun for me has been finding or inventing improvements for their shortcomings. Of course, it’s rarely about right or wrong, but just what pleases you on your boat. Have fun, Tor———————-Silverheels, P-424 #17www.silverheels.us——————

Many thanks, Tor, would like to see a picture of your brow stripe painted on. I like the idea of reducing maintenance and of course leaks, which is why I started this project. Did your eyebrow pieces have a channel cut in the back of them?

Have attached a few photos; as you can see all of the screw holes have small cracks radiating from them. I opened them up a bit and filled with epoxy; still have to finish sand them. You can also see that all of my grab rails are pretty well worn down so much that bunges cannot even be fitted to cover the bolts. When I get to those I plan on installing SS grab rails. I installed them on my wee boat project in Singapore and liked them. Used SS end piece and risers from New Found Metals.

Portlights all need to be rebedded or replaced, but will make that the subject of another mail; the 6 smaller ones are plastic were made by Beckson; the 4 larger ones are aluminum; uncertain of manufacturer, no markings.

      Thanks again, Tor!
