Pushing the envelope with Lady Leanne off Diamond Head with just jig and jigger. Damned if the mizzen traveller tang didn’t part. I guess the SS is just old. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you approach repair? I only want to pull the taff rail as a last resort for welding.

      Hi Dan,

I think you can have that welded on the boat as is. But I have another idea
which I am taking from Jack and Pat’s “Whoosh”.

I’ve given a great deal of thought on how to control the mizzen better. On
Whoosh, they have rigged blocks and tackles on either side of the main boom
for sail control and as preventers. It alleviates the need for a traveler
and boom vang. It also locks the boom in place.

The mizzen twists too much off the wind with the one point of attachment.
There’s no vang or provision for same.

What would happen, then, if you added a new pad eye at the aft corners of
the cockpit and had tackles like the running backs to the bale on the mizzen
boom? You could use them to shape the sail any way you wanted. It would
also allow you to prevent gybes.

True, that’s some more line in the cockpit, but it might be worth it.

I assume that you mean the tang welded to the pushpit for the mizzen sheet?

Great idea Bob! Thanks for making me see outside the box. I’ll trot down to West today and begin to sort it out.

If you use a fiddle with a snap shackle on it you could use a webbing loop,
or one of those Ronstan Dyneema Links, or even a big locking carabiner (that
would scratch the stern pulpit pipe) attached around the stern pulpit where
that supportive inverted “V” is located. That would also allow you to sheet
from other places (like the eyepads for the running backs).

The main idea of using the snap shackle is one I copied from s/v Sarah.

FYI all: The SS tang broke in half through the eyehole. The weld is still strong.
