I’m about to barrier-coat Silverheels’ bottom after letting it dry out
all summer. Thinking I’ll also paint the epoxy over the bronze prop
shaft strut and skeg shoe, and then paint them with anti-fouling. Has
anyone done this? Any opinions on the best primer for bronze for keeping
bottom paint on it? I’ve read about zinc primers, but since I’m putting
on the epoxy barrier coat anyway…

Tonto-HI-I just had my bottom painted.I asked the yard if there was anything I could coat the prop and shaft with to prevent barnacle buildup because both were covered on haulout. He suggested prop speed and said they’d had good results with it and took me out to a yacht with 2 huge props that had been in the Bahamas a year since they put it on and it looked like new!I then had it applied.Afterwards I noticed quarts of it for sale at West Marine-not cheap but really effective. The name Prop speed may not be correct but something close to it.I think there is only one brand out there.
I’m excited with it since I am headed to Florida in Dec from Myrtle Beach.Anyone else going my way?

Joe, I am in Deltavlille Va. at the moment. I should be leaving next week. Hope  to be in Fla. in the latter part of Nov or 1st week in Dec. Going to Stuart then to Nassau.

I used just the zinc primer on my prop and shaft and thought it worked pretty darn good. Spent a season in the eastern Carrib and the Bahamas.

Did you install a separate metal shoe on your skeg Tor?

Somewhere around here I have a multi-step recipe for prop coating. The
next time I see it, I promise to post it to the group. It worked really
      well on my Maxprop.

Thanks, Joe. That sounds like the stuff I read about. This is the note I
      have about it:

Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier 1792 provides easy to use aerosol spray
protection for bare metals including steel, stainless steel, cast iron,
copper, bronze, galvanized steel, and lead. It forms an excellent bond
to underwater metals and running gear, and inhibits corrosion on these
surfaces. Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier’s smooth, hard surface will
self-clean in service, and can be used above or below the waterline. The
dried film of Zinc Coat contains 93% pure zinc.

I believe there are a couple of other, similar products out there. I’ll
probably use zinc paint on the prop and shaft, but since the strut and
skeg shoe are stationary – and since I’m going to barrier-coat the
bottom anyway – I thought I’d just go ahead and coat them with the
epoxy, too, and then lay on anti-fouling paint over it – unless there’s
      a reason not to.

No, Pete, my boat came with a bronze skeg shoe. Didn’t they all?

I am pretty sure this is the stuff Joe was talking about:

      http://www.propspeedusa.com/

There are several discussions about it on SSCA. Here is one of them:

      Very helpful. Thanks, Paul.

PropSpeed is expensive! I wonder if you couldn’t accomplish much the
same thing by coating the prop with liquid epoxy after some careful
preparation (cleaning) of the surfaces. Would it stay on? Has anyone
      experimented with that?

Another alternative is that Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier 1792 (or a
similar spray-on zinc coating), which I mentioned earlier. Its name and
its claim to be “self-cleaning” suggest it might prove useful as a
barnacle inhibitor as well as a sacrificial annode. I’m thinking of
using it as a primer and applying anti-fouling paint over it on the
strut & skeg shoe. I doubt if any of these paints (other than the
PropSpeed) will last on the prop, but for me that’s easy enough to
clean. My cruising is pretty much limited to tropical waters these days.

So many possibilities, so many unknowns…
