ParticipantReplaced Clairebuoyant’s handrails with stainless. Cleaning out garage and have the original teak rails looking for a new home. Three long, two short, need sanding and repair to one end on a short one. Loop dimensions are different than what is available new. Boat has forward companionway layout.
Just happen to buy something that came in a suitable shipping tube, and the post office is a shorter ride than the dump.
Just pay postage.

What was the loop dimension with the stainless? Did you fill holes in the cabin top? I saw a 424 with stainless rails but never looked at the details to see the work involved in the change. This might be something on my to do list!

ParticipantI removed the teak handrails and the teak eyebrow. The teak handrails had worn thin and the eyebrows were a source of water leaks. I had a local shop make new handrails with backing plates. In a pinch I could use the handrails to pull the boat if needed. I am very pleased with the result.

Hi Lee, I think we met and it’s your boat that I saw those on. One of my curiosities was where would you find them? Custom machine shop sounds a bit heavy from the wallet. The boat I’m working on now I just built new teak 6 footers (2) and a pair of 4 footers for about $340 with material. I haven’t installed them yet, so that will add to his cost!

ParticipantI don’t remember what I paid for the handrails but I do remember that they weren’t too expensive. I had removed the headliner and that made installation very easy.

Silverheels’ hand rails are OK, but the teak eyebrow leaked no matter how I
re-bedded it. So I removed it, filled the holes and painted a (I think) 1″
stripe there using the same paint as on the cove & boot stripes. Looks
great, doesn’t leak anymore.Tor

ParticipantDid not use original holes but covered most of them. Used 1″ ss tubing and fittings I got from new found metals. Since the fittings were on sale and the tubing was salvaged, it wasn’t an expensive project. None of the commercially available teak rails that I could find match the originals.
Before I went to stainless, I did replace them with teak rails from Defender with a teak strip to cover the old holes. Just got tired of sanding teak. Both sets in garage if anyone wants them.
Clairebuoyant is hauled for a bottom job, down to the blister repair job we did 10 years ago. Pleased to see that bottom is still in great shape. Ten year old topside paint pretty as new after compound and wax. Will probably have decks done next.

ParticipantI agree with Lee, the eyebrow is a PITA. I removed ours. Was going to use tape instead but I think boat looks fine without it.

ParticipantHamilton Marine in Maine has stainless handrails. They are nice but spendy. We used a couple for a roof rack on Harvey, our stealth RV.

ParticipantA PO replaced our teak handrails and removed the eyebrow several years ago Never experienced any leaks from these areas. Now all I have left to do is get the momentum to install the granny bars around the mainmast.

ModeratorHi Lee,
I remember. Also, I remember what your guy wanted for a second set.
Double +. The teak grab rails have 12″ centers, all new manufactured ones
have 10″ centers. I am thinking of replacing mine with Plasteak which
requires no maintenance and from 30 feet away looks like teak, Or
stainless. Hard to tell which.Bob
