ParticipantThanks to the gnerousity of John Stevenson and Chuck Ruble, I have a spare engine that I am raiding for spares.
I don’t know if I should leave the injection pump home and ask to have it sent if mine fails, or take it off and take it with me.
it is a compound question – how likely to fail is an old injection pump, and what are the risks/complexities of disrupting a pump that seems to be perfectly happy where it is; what is the liklihood of a successful transplant?
I think I should remove it and take it with me, but I thought I would ask.

If you aren’t going far from home, leave it there. These things are pretty delicate and you don’t want to damage it.I got a spare engine a few years ago. I figured that I could pull my pump off and send it out for service, leaving the pump from the spare engine as a backup. Big mistake. The pump shop (Boston Fuel Injection) ruined the pump. The engine wouldn’t run right after the pump was rebuilt. I had to raise the idle to keep it running.

I am headed for the Lesser Antilles, so I am going pretty far from home.
So did you transplant the injection pump from the spare once your original
was ruined?

RichCarterParticipantNo, I replaced the whole engine and got rid of all the old spares. I got
tired of not being able to get spare parts. If you bring a spare fuel pump, you might consider vacuum bagging the thing
to make sure it doesn’t corrode.Rich
