What are you smart skippers using for your cutlass bearing? Make,
model/type, length (is it 4″?), source, etc. I replaced mine a few years ago
and now can’t find the order info for it.Thanks,
Tor

Maybe it was 6″. Also, what outside diameter?

Excellent! Thanks, Patrick. I believe that’s what I bought last time. Just couldn’t find the data in my files.
FYI, the site you mentioned, fisheriessupply.com, is selling that cutlass bearing for $109.37, but it’s only $69.99 at http://www.deepblueyachtsupply.com/products/navalbrassinchcutlessbearing.aspx .

SpectatorYeah Fisheries is just convenient (right by my condo) not cheaper on
everything, but some things.Only cool thing is they track everything if you setup an account and then
you have a completely online copy of everything I’ve bought. Plan to print
that out before we leave town. They also have variable pricing. The more you
spend the deeper your discount.-p

Thanks, Pete. Every little bit helps stretch the cruising kitty. (Looks like the eBay sellers spell it “cutless.” I never have been clear on what’s correct.)

Let’s not start that discussion again (almost as bad as the anchor threads)
[?]. Let’s just accept that the name can be whatever the seller thinks it
is.On Wed, Dec 8, 2010 at 5:02 PM, Adamlaw wrote:

ParticipantThat was a long discussion a while ago. “Cutless” was the trademark.
You might even find for sale copies of the original ads for the bearing
in ebay. Back when we all would have grown up with lathes, etc, the
concept of a bearing cutting less of your shaft would have rung true.On 12/8/2010 2:44 PM, SilverHeels wrote:

ParticipantOn the subject of ‘I found a cheaper source’…
I did a major refit on a twin engine trawler. The dripless shaft seals which were relatively new were already failing. I contacted the manufacturer and explained the issue, they said they would replace them and sent me such. They also requested we send the old ones back so they could examine them. A few weeks later I get a call back and asked to find out where the customer had obtained them from. They were knock offs.I’m sure the cost to replace them was considerably more than the savings up front.
Make sure such products are coming from a reputable supplier. These knock offs passed all the tests except usage.
Duramax is the main manufacturer of cutless bearings, they supply the military as well.
SS hardware/fasteners is another real problem we are seeing problems with.
I’ve purposely not noted the manufacturer or the source of the parts.

ParticipantSorry, ‘Johnson-Duramax’ and I’d bet Deep Blue is a reputable supplier.
