I’ve long since replaced the fuel tank. At that time, I installed a remote fuel gauge. I never liked the idea of getting down on my hands and knees with a flashlight to read the gauge. Replacement of the mechanical gauge with an electric gauge and dash display should be straightforward.

We’ve discussed fuel consumption in the past. Fuel consumption numbers I’ve heard usually run just below 1 gal/hr. I honestly don’t know what my fuel consumption is because I’ve never run the boat at a constant speed for a long enough time to make an accurate computation. My own opinion is that under the same conditions, we should get similar fuel consumption numbers regardless of engine. Factors such as the condition of the bottom, headwind, sea state, and throttle setting would have more to do with consumption than engine selection. Looking at my engine manual, if I lift the lever all the way up, consumption would be about 4 gal/hr at 3800 rpm. I don’t run the engine that hard, but its common for me to cruise the boat at about 7.3 kts. At this speed (2700rpm), the engine is running under a moderate load. I would guesstimate fuel consumption at this speed to be about 1.5 gal/hr. If I drop the throttle down to about 2300 rpm, the engine is under a light load and the boat is doing about 6.7kts. At this speed I would guess that consumption is about 1 gal/hr. This seems to be the sweet spot. If I’m not in a hurry this is where I normally set the throttle. If I were to drop the throttle down to about 2100 rpm, consumption would probably be below 1gal/hr and speed wold be about 6.3kts.
