ModeratorSome time ago I mentioned I had two alternators on my WB58 and Tor amongst others marveled at this fact and asked for pictures. As I've just uncovered the engine to commission it and replace the raw water pump impeller I thought, “Well, hey, I can take some pictures for the gang!” Yes, I do sometimes think in quoted sentences.
So attached are some. The black one's on the starboard side and the red one's on the port. The brackets seem to have been Westerbeke made, but I'm not sure.
As to the water pump:
It turns out that I can sit on the engine, lie down over the front and work on the pump pretty easily. If I'd had a spare impeller handy and I didn't need to flatten the cover plate to remove the gouging and I didn't need new lock washers and new screws, the whole job would have taken about an hour and a half, which isn't so bad compared to some of the other stuff I get into.
Oh, yes, and dropping the odd washer, bolt or nut under the engine.
Breathlessly, I suppose, you're wondering how long it took. Six hours. Including getting lost finding a shortcut in New Rochelle, NY…
Hope you all had at least as entertaining a weekend!

Bob,
Thanks for the alternator photos. Can’t tell exactly how that would translate onto my Yanmar, but I get the general idea and may endeavor to duplicate it when I get to that point on The List.
While you were lounging on top of your engine stretching a 5 minute job into 6 hours, I was up at the other end of Silver Heels crammed into the what I have dubbed “the forepit,” drilling some awkward (as in deep and angled) holes for the PVC conduit that will bring in the new windlass’ cables & wires on one side, and the deck washdown pump’s intake water hose on the other. Here are a few photos showing the removable divider boards and the conduit pipe installation-in-progress. Oh, how I dream of just layin’ around on the engine all day like some yachtsmen I know.
