If you want to do a good job cleaning the engine compartment I suggest removing the engine. This sounds extreme, but removing the engine isn’t that big a deal if you have access to a small crane. The engine can also be lifted out of the way without a crane, but you won’t have anyplace convenient to put it. My guess is that much of the filth in your engine compartment is the engine itself. With the engine removed, you can clean and paint the engine. While you have it out you can inspect and repair/rebuild the accessories such as alternator. You can also clean up the engine wiring harness. I suggest using a lighter color than the dinghy Westerbeke red. I used caterpillar yellow. The lighter color makes it easier to see in the engine compartment.

With the engine out, you can get in there with something like simple-green to get the grime and oil off the engine pan and engine compartment. Once you get the oil removed, you can use bilgecoat to paint everything.

Most of the grime in your engine compartment comes from the air intake. If you want to keep the engine compartment clean I suggest getting an airsep filter. Avoid the airsep dealer in Worcester Mass however.

If you go this route, don’t forget to take a good look at your engine pan. Most boats have problems with the pan.

      Regards
      Rich
