ParticipantDoes anyone have any suggestions for grinding fiberglass in tight quarters.
I am doing some grinding in the bottom aft end of the bilge, and it is too
narrow to use my 4′ grinder. I see 3M makes a product called Roloc with 2″ –
24 grit disks that I could use on my die grinder. Has anyone used these or
have a better idea ( Tor – you must be the expert on fiberglass grinding by
now). Will some type of wire wheel work. Thanks,
Paul

I’m not sure how tight an area you have nor how large. I’ve used a rotary rasp before to trim around holes. They come in different shapes and sizes.http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=35453
Cutting tools don’t hold up very well when used on fiberglass, so if you have a larger area, you may be better off with a sanding tool.

BTW: The starbrite attachment on either of the above is great for polishing stainless.Rich Carter

While we’re in the Harbor Freight catalog I’ve used this:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=94029 it’s
a small dust collector that I can keep in the cockpit while working down
below. It doesn’t catch it all when the grinder gets going, but it gets
most of it. I think it will be a big help when refinishing the woodwork in
the cabin also. I use the collection ends that I use on my large collector
in the shop at home. Big funnels or wide flat collectors depending on what
I need to catch.Linus

Thanks for the ideas. I ended up locating some of those small discs to use
on a die grider, and they do the job.As far as dust goes, I am quickly finding that sealing off the area 100 %
with plastic and duct tape may be the only way to stop getting it
everywhere. It is amazing how fast the dust ends up throughout the boat (
Rich – as I think you mentioed this when you had your V-berth re-inforced.)Paul
