When I first bought my boat there was a problem with sludge and slime in the tank. I attributed it to water getting into the tank and fixed the problem by putting an O-ring on the fill cap. The cap doesn’t leak anymore. I don’t know if the cap came with no ring or it was lost at some point.
I put the same kind of O-rings on the water tank caps.
