The saga of the damper plate is hopefully coming to an end. I’m still in
Oriental, but I expect to be leaving by the end of the week.
This has been an expensive and time-consuming learning experience. I’m not
sure how valuable the learning experience has been because I hope I will
never have the opportunity to look at the damper plate on my engine again.
That is I hope I’ll not have to remove the transmission from this engine
for the rest of my ownership.
In my last post I stated that the failed damper plate was from R&D and the
failure was due to an incorrect installation. I was only guessing it was
an R&D plate as my invoice from the yard in Jacksonville did not identify
it. It looked like an R&D plate and that was what Mack Boring Transmission
Division was spec’ing. I didn’t realize that the yard in Jacksonville was
dealing with Mastry, the Yanmar distributor for Georgia and Florida. The
damper plate was from Centa, but just like the R&D plate it was not
bi-directional and it was installed backwards.
It took over 2 weeks here at Deaton Yacht Services to get a resolution. A
good portion of that time was taken up with the Thanksgiving holiday. I
was in LA with my brothers and nephews for a portion of that time. Deaton
worked with Mack Boring to come up with the solution. That turned out to
be a VulKan damper plate and a new set of shims. The shims are actually
metal rings that provide the spacing between the flywheel, damper plate and
transmission. After the installation I started the engine and put it into
gear and — no noise. Not just no noise but almost silence. Absolutely
      not gear backlash noise.
I have issues with Mack Boring (why all this time and at my expense to come
up with a solution) and Lamb’s Boatyard in Jacksonville (incompetent
mechanics), but those issues will be resolved (to my satisfaction or not)
      when I get to Jacksonville.

Now I just want to get to warm.

      John,

It is awful to hear the troubles you have had here. To my recollection
you are not the first to have such problems though with mating up the
velvet drive. This goes to my comment earlier about the exceptional
engineering done by Beta when it came to their bobtail kit for the Velvet
drive. It was as simple as tightening four bolts (actually two studs and
two bolts) and two hose fittings. The bell was the right length. No
shims, no spacers – one piece. And the new damper plate was included.

Hopefully you will be back on the air soon and your wallet also restored.

      All the best,

      Pete

      Hey John,

Hate to break bad news when you’ve just finished an ordeal like that,
but you may not be as warm as you think in Jacksonville. It got down to
the mid-30’s here night before last! It’s warming up again now, for a
while at least, but figure another thousand miles south just to play it
      safe.

Silverheels was re-launched yesterday after 2 long months in the work
yard. Upgrades this time around include an epoxy bottom and a new, 175W
solar panel! (Why did I wait so long?) Aiming to set sail for Luperon,
DR in a couple of weeks, with a brief stop at Turks & Caicos en route.
From there it’s downwind to Cuba’s south coast.

      Reef early,

      Tor
