ParticipantWe are moving our Pearson 424 to Southwest Florida. While we can manage with the 5’3″ draft, we are researching reducing the draft by about 6″. Has anyone cut their keel? What negatives/positives did you experience?

ParticipantThe 424 is such a sea-kindly boat, I would not mess with the keel for
fear of messing up the ride.Pete

ModeratorHi Don,
The draft, unless you measured, is actually 5’6″, but that aside, it’s not a
trivial task to shorten the keel. Since it’s encapsulated, you can’t be
really sure what you’ll run into cutting into it. Moreover, there’s the
change in righting moment from removing a significant portion of the
ballast. Before attempting it, I’d sure check with a naval architect before having at
it.Bob

ParticipantI looked into this a few years ago for a Catalina. I could not justify the cost for that boat. The company is looked at was http://www.marskeel.com/
Sorry i cannot give you the answers for your other questions but this will give you somewhere to start looking and an idea of the cost.
