The original hatches on my boat have either tinted Lexan or acrylic.
      Anyone know which it is?

      Tor,
You can check with Bomar (Pompanette), but I’m pretty sure they are acrylic.

No matter what is original, use acrylic. It’s less expensive, it’s almost
as strong, and it has better uv resistance. I went with 3/8″ or double
installed thickness, beveled edges, bedded with Dow Corning 794.

      Tor,
      What Bob said.

Years ago I was going replace the companionway hatch on my previous
boat and wanted to make the hatch out of tinted plastic to get more
light into the boat. I thought I needed Lexan because I needed to be
able to stand on the hatch when furling the main sail. The plastics
shop I dealt with talked me out of Lexan even though they would have
made a lot more money selling me a sheet of Lexan. The reasons they
gave for acrylic over Lexan included UV resistance and better abrasion
resistance. I think they also said Lexan expands and contracts more
than acrylic, but I not really sure of that.

Thanks, guy, all that supports what I’ve heard about the two materials.
I’m not replacing my hatches, only patching a hole that used to have a
leaky air vent in it. Plan to just cut a big circle of clear acrylic for
the patch, clear because I’d actually like a little more sunlight in the
      forepeak workshop.
